When you hear Westerners say “ Drop in anytime”(隨時(shí)來玩)or “Come and see me soon” , you should realize that it doesn’t mean you are welcome to come over to their house anytime. It’s wise to telephone before visiting someone.

Never accept an invitation unless you really plan to go. You may refuse by saying, “Thank you for inviting me, but I may not be able to come.” If you are unable to come after accepting the invitation, be sure to tell those who invite you in advance(提前)that you will not be there.

When you have accepted the invitation to a party or a dinner, it is polite to bring small gifts with you, such as bottles of drink, flowers and chocolate. Sometimes Westerners may take you out to dinner in a restaurant and it does not necessarily mean that he is going to pay the bill at the end of the meal. When you are reading something in English, you may often meet with a new word. What’s the best way to learn it?

You may look it up in the English-Chinese dictionary. It will tell you a lot about the word: the pronunciation, the Chinese meaning and how to use the word. But how can you know where the word is in thousands of English words? How to find it in the dictionary both quickly and correctly?

First, all the English words are arranged(安排) in the letter order. In the dictionary you can first see the words beginning with letter A, then B, C, D… That means, if there are two words “desert” and “pull”, “desert” will be certainly before “pull”. Then if there are two words both beginning with the same letter, you may look at the second letter. Then the third, the fourth. For example, “pardon” is before “please”, “judge” before “just”, ect.

Do you understand how to look up a word in the dictionary?

The dictionary will be your good friends. I hope you’ll use it as often as possible in your English study.

Think about the different ways that people use the wind. You can use it to fly a kite or to sail a boat. Wind is one of our cleanest and richest power sources, as well as one of the oldest. Something shows that windmills(風(fēng)車)began to be used in ancient Iran back in the seventh century BC. They were first introduced to Europe during the 1100s, when armies returned from the Middle East with knowledge of using wind power.

For many centuries, people used windmills to make wheat into flour(面粉) or get water from deep underground. When electricity was discovered in the late 1800s, people living in faraway areas began to use them to produce electricity. This allowed them to have electric lights and radio. However, by the 1940s when electricity was available to people in almost all areas of the United States, windmills were hardly used.

During the 1970s, people started becoming more cared about the pollution that is created when coal and gas are burned to produce electricity. People also realized that the supply of coal and gas would run out one day. Then, wind was rediscovered, though it means higher costs. Today, there is a global movement to supply more and more of our electricity through the use of wind.

1. From the first paragraph, what can we know about wind and windmills?

C. Windmills were used in ancient Iran in the 7th Century BC.

D. Armies used windmills in Europe and the Middle East.

2.What did people use windmills to do for many centuries?

A. To help make flour from wheat.

B. To help get water from the river.

C. To help make electric lights.

D. To help dig wells in faraway areas.

3.When were the windmills used to produce electricity in some places?

A. In the 1100s. B. In the 1940s.

C. In the 1970s. D. In the 1800s

4.Why was wind rediscovered during the 1970s?

A. Because coal and gas had been used up.

B. Because it was cheaper to produce electricity.

C. Because it’s cleaner than other sources.

D. Because it could only be used in faraway areas.

5.What was the correct order for the passage ?

a. windmills were used in ancient Iran.

b. people used windmills to produce electricity

c. people used windmills to make flour.

d. windmills were hardly used.

A. a-b-c-d B. a-c-b-d
