Being busy can become a way of life. Our lives are always filled with emails and text messages. They make us feel wanted and important, but in a tiring and empty way. Being busy has a dangerous allure(誘惑). If you are busy all the time, it’s hard to sit quietly with your thoughts or to really feel what you’re feeling. Whynot let everything become a choice — how we spend time, who we reply to and how much or little we write?
Many of us are busy becauseour self-worth goes up when people make demands(需求)on our time. Whydon’t we free ourselves from needing, or even wanting? Why don’t we make the best use of the time and space to be productive in a way that it best serves us? That may be consciously(主動(dòng)地)keeping ourselves not busy. In fact many great discoverieswere made by people who built white space into their day.
Imagine asking “How are you?” to one of the most successful people you know like Warren Buffet. I’ve never heard anyone at that level answer “busy” though most people believe they are.
What are they doing differently?
First, they aim to project an image that things are under control. Second, they actually have things under control. They’ve had excellent staff, implemented(實(shí)施)thoughtful processes and they spend time only on critical tasks that require their attention. They make high-level strategic decisions with a large effect.
It’s time to end the glory of being busy and spend time setting up processes that make sense, rather than simply working more hours. To do this, you need to change yourway of thinking. It’s cool to say you’re busy, but it’s better to be busy helping someone carry a stroller up the subway stairs or busy finishing a book.
How to free us from the trendof being busy? Start with small steps. For one day, be mindful of every daily activity. Consider each thing a choice and decide proactively(預(yù)先)if it’s necessary or simply a habit you can get rid of or do in half the time. Next, stop saying how busy you are. Then, figure out what you want to achieve with your day and begin doing it. Put your time and energy where you want it to be.
1.What are many of us busy doing every day?
A. Sitting quietly and think actively.
B. Meeting people’s demands on our time.
C.Making great discoveries.
D. Takinghigh-level decisions.
2.Why don’t successful people like Warren Buffet answer “busy”?
A. Because they value working abilities and attitude.
B. Because they focus on attracting excellent workers.
C. Because they pay more attention to learning management.
D. Because they think well and spend more time on critical tasks.
3.The writer probably agrees that we should ______.
A. stop considering each thing a choice
B. work more hours to achieve our goals
C. answer emails and messages as soon as possible
D. be mindful where we want our time and energy to be
4.What is the writer’s purpose in writing the passage?
A. To advise us to be freedfrom the trend of being busy.
B. To warn us about the danger of leading a busy life.
C. To show us ways to feel good about being busy.
D. To tell us how to fit into the busy modern life.

Fire was discovered many thousands of years ago. The first time humans saw fire was probably when a tree was destroyed by lightning(閃電). Humans soon learned how to make fire. They probably made the first fire by rubbing (摩擦)two sticks together.
Fire was very important to humans. They needed to keep warm at night. They used fire to cook food. They used fire to keep enemies and wild animals away. In some parts of the world fire was used to send messages. The Indians in America, for example, used fire to make smoke as a message. In some other countries people lit fires to warn their friends of danger.
Fire was also used to give light. Before the invention of the oil lamp(燈), humans burned sticks to get light.
One man even used fire to tell the time. He invented a candle clock. He made a candle that took exactly twelve hours to burn. Then he marked this candle in twelve equal(相等的) parts. He lit the candle and could tell the time by counting the number of parts left of the burning candle. But the candle clock did not always work well. If there was a wind blowing on the candle, it burned too quickly.

The world is not hungry , but it is thirsty . It seems strange that nearly 3/4 of the earth is covered with water while we say we are short of (短缺) water. Why? Because about 97% of water on the earth is sea water which we can't drink or use for watering plants directly (直接地) . Man can only drink and use the 3% - the water that comes from rivers and lakes. And we can't even use all of that, because some of it has been polluted (污染) .
Now more water is needed. The problem is: Can we avoid (避免) a serious water shortage later on? First, we should all learn how to save water. Secondly, we should find out the ways to reuse it . Scientists have always been making studies in the field. Today, in most large cities water is used only once and then runs to the sea or rivers . But it can be used again. Even if (即使) every large city reused its water, still there would not be enough. What could people turn to next?
The sea seems to have the best answer. There is a lot of water in the sea. All that needs to be done is to get the salt out of the sea water. This is expensive, but it's already used in many parts of the world. Scientists are trying to find a cheaper way of doing it. So you see, if we can find a way out, we'll be in no danger of drying up.
1.The world is thirsty because ________.
A. 3/4 of the earth is covered with water
B. we have enough sea water to use directly
C. we haven't used all the water in rivers and lakes

B. 75% of water on the earth is the sea.
C. 97% of the earth is covered with water.
D. 3% of water on the earth is sea water.
3.From the passage we learn _________.
A. if every city reuses its water, we'll be in no danger of drying up
B. man can only drink and use about 25% of water on the earth
C. today in most large cities water is used only once
D. water can be used only once
4.To avoid the serious water shortage , which of the following is the most important?
A. Save water and try to make good use of the water in rivers and lakes.
B. Don't pollute water and keep all rivers and lakes clean.
C. Make dirty water clean and then reuse it.
D. Try to find a cheaper way to get the salt out of the sea water.
5.The name of the passage would be ________
A. The Sea Water B. How to Save Water
C. The Thirsty World D. The Polluted Water
