Sports, school are tiring. But there is a great way to unwind after all of those activities. Go to north London, to the coolest part of the city---Camden. There you can find fashion trends (流行,趨向) and famous people.
Sam and I walked down Camden High Street and made our way to a bridge over Regent’s Canal. It is a 9-mile man-made river that goes through London.
We went into a big market and saw crazy signs, fun T-shirts, and things like hand-made earrings for sale. We bought Chinese fried noodles. It tasted very different from the noodles we make at home, and we ate it with a fork instead of chopsticks!
Camden is famous for the punk(朋克)style that started in the 1970s. Punks walked around with bright pink and green hair, broken clothes with safety pins, metal buttons(紐扣)and pierced ears and lips. Punk music shops played loud, heavy rock music.
But there were also groups of hippies(嬉皮士)with big sweaters. They sat in cafes drinking soymilk, with black clothes, black lipstick and painted white faces.
Besides all these “normal” people, a lot of famous people come to Camden. Actor Orlando Bloom from Pirates of the Caribbean lives there.
Camden is especially known as a home to famous musicians. Lots of top bands played here, including Coldplay, Oasis---and Sam’s favourite band, The Vaccines. I had never heard of them before---But luckily they were playing that night in Camden.

The book is going to celebrate its birthday this August. It began exactly half a century ago. And it’s always one of the best selling books in the world.

Akuapem is in the eastern part of Ghana. The sun there shines all the time. The local people are very friendly and hospitable(好客的). Now let’s have a look at how Akuapem people receive a visitor.
A visitor is often welcomed warmly in a family of Akuapem. After the visitor is welcomed into the house, he is offered a seat and water at the very beginning, because the host assumes that the visitor must have come from a very long journey and need water. If there is a group of visitors, the host will greet the visitors from right to left. And the host shakes only with his right hand, because Akuapem people think the left hand is not clean.
Next, the visitor is asked how his journey was and why he has come. While the conversation is going on, the wife and the children, especially girls, are preparing food for the visitor. The visitor can choose his favorite food. After the visitor finishes eating, the host and the visitor go on with their conversation. Usually this is short one because the visitor is getting ready to say goodbye.
When the visitor is leaving, he is often given some food. He is also accompanied(陪伴) by one of the children to the nearest station. The child who accompanies the visitor will not come back home until the visitor leaves safely.

It can be hard to meet people from another culture. From the beginning, people may send the wrong signal (信號). Or they may pay no attention to signals from another person who is trying to develop a relationship.
Different cultures emphasize(強調(diào))the importance of relationship building to a greater or lesser degree. For example, business in some countries is not possible until there is a relationship of trust. Even with people at work, it is necessary to spend a lot of time in “small talk”, usually over a glass of tea, before they do any job. In many European countries—like the UK or France—people find it easier to build up a lasting working relationship at restaurants or cafes rather than at the office.
Talk and silence may also be different in some cultures. I once made a speech in Thailand. I had expected my speech to be a success and start a lively discussion; instead there was an uncomfortable silence. The people present just stared at me and smiled. After getting to know their ways better, I realized that they thought I was talking too much. In my own culture, we express meaning mainly through words, but people there sometimes feel too many words are unnecessary.
Even within Northern Europe, cultural differences can cause serious problems. Certainly, English and German cultures share similar values; however, Germans prefer to get down to business more quickly. We think that they are rude. In fact, this is just because one culture starts discussions and makes decisions more quickly.
People from different parts of the world have different values, and sometimes these values are quite against each other. However, if we can understand them better, a multicultural(多元文化)environment will offer a wonderful chance for us to learn from each other.
小題1:In some countries, eating together at restaurants may make it easier for people to ______.
A.keep each other company
B.share the same culture
C.get to know each other
D.develop closer relations
小題2:The writer mentions his experience in Thailand to show that ______.
A.too many words are of no use
B.the English prefer to make long speeches
C.even talk and silence can be culturally different
D.people from Thailand are quiet and shy by nature
小題3:What would be the best title for the passage?
A.Multicultural Environment
B.Cross-Cultural Differences
C.How to Understand Each Other
D.How to Build Up a Relationship
