Two of the most famous symbols in the world are the Red Cross and the Red Crescent. They are the symbols of the International Red Cross Society and the Islamic version of the same group, the International Red Crescent Society. Both societies do the same thing:they help people who have been injured (受傷) in war or natural disasters (災(zāi)難) such as floods and earthquakes.
In June,1859 a Swiss man named Jean-Henri Dunant organized emergency aid for hundreds of French and Austrian soldiers who lay wounded (受傷的) and dying after the Battle of Solferino in Italy. Their plan was to have ambulances (救護車) to help the injured in wartime. These ambulances would have large red crosses on them. Soldiers on both sides would know that these ambulances had injured men in them and would not attack them. It was not long before the Red Cross had hospitals on the battlefields (戰(zhàn)地) and ships to carry the injured soldiers. Now they even have flying helicopters in the sky.

On the first day of the eighth grade,I waited at the stop for the school bus. When it arrived,I got on and said hello to the bus driver,Mr Rolland. Then I noticed one little girl called Amy. She was different from everyone else on the bus. "Don't talk to Amy," warned Lauren, who sat beside me. "Or everybody will make fun of you."
Amy had many physical differences―her eyes weren't straight, her glasses were an inch thick, and she had really uneven teeth. Every day as we rode to and from school, kids would shout insults at Amy.
"God,what a strange face!Stop looking at me!" "Mr Rolland!Amy took off her glasses, and now her eyes are scaring me. Make her put them back on!" they would say. For a while I shouted my share of insults, just to fit in. After all,I didn't want the other kids to treat me the same way they did to Amy. But while I was insulting her,my heart ached for the girl.
I began to pity her. Then I wanted to stand up for her. I just didn't know how to stop my schoolmates until the night of our class rollerskating party. Our whole class was there, including Amy. Amy didn't know how to skate, but I could see how much she wanted to have fun like the rest of us. So I skated over to her and took her by the hand. I slowly pulled her away from the wall, and together we began around the skating ring. I never said a word to her,and she never spoke to me. She just smiled and every once in a while she would laugh in excitement.
On the school bus the next morning there was much news about Amy and me skating together. But nobody insulted her any more. When the school year ended,my family moved away. And I never heard from Amy again. But I've always hoped that I changed her life for the better.
In fact, she changed my life. After becoming her friend,I no longer tried to impress people by trying to act like them or dress like them. I became myself.
