According to Zhou Zhicheng, head of the communications satellite department of the China Academy of Space Technology, the speed means it takes less than one minute to download a 1-GB movie. But the satellite’s benefits are far greater that that. China is trying to have 22 communication satellites in the sky by 2025. Shijian 13 will be able to cover wider areas, including mountains, oceans and deserts. When people have emergencies while hiking or sailing, the satellite can help them report and ask for help. When I was living in Chiang Mai, Thailand, I owned a small apartment and ate delicious Asian noodles 3 times per day. With the room at $5 per night and meals for $1, I spent about $8 per day.

One of the coolest things to do in Chiang Mai is to go on a zip line adventure. It cost me $60 to get into the trees, which is about what I paid to live for 1 week in

Thailand. If you want to go on an excursion (遠足) every day, you’ll easily spend

five times as much on “fun” as you do on necessities. This is true all over the world, so make sure you plan excursions into your travel budget ahead of time.

● Plan for the unexpected

You won’t always be prepared for everything that comes your way while traveling. You need at least $1,000 to help you deal with the unexpected.
