Sally Ride, America's first spacewoman, doesn't look very different from a lot of other American women. She is attractive, with brown hair, dark brown eyes, and a bright smile. She likes to dress simply: she wears comfortable but colorful clothes. But in 1983 Sally Ride became American's flint woman astronaut (宇航員). She was one of five astronaut on the space shuttle(航天飛機) “Challenger” , which had a successful six-day trip in space in June 1983.
Sally Ride grew up in Los Angeles, California. Her father is a professor at Santa Monica College, and her mother is a housewife. At Westlake High School for girls, she was both an excellent student and tennis player. Today she still looks like a sportswoman. She is 5 feet, 4 inches tall, weight 103 pounds. When she was still a student, she became a very successful tennis player. She thought about becoming a professional sportswoman~, but decided to go on to college.
At high school, she became interest in science after finishing her studies. At the university, she worked as a researcher. In 1977 she was one of 1,000 women and 7,000men who applied (申請) for the astronaut training program. She was 25.

“Do you want to come with me?” Sally asked her brother. “I’m going to meet some friends at the bike course(賽道,路線)down the block. We’re going to practice for the race next week.”
