Nelson Mandela, South Africa's first black president,has died at the age of 95. President Jacob Zuma (祖瑪) said on South African national TV， “Our nation has lost its greatest son. ”
Mr Mandela led South Africa's transition (轉(zhuǎn)變) from white-minority (少數(shù)白人) rule in the 1990s. He managed to bring down the policy (政策) of racial segregation (種族隔離) while avoiding a civil war (內(nèi)戰(zhàn)) . For his fight against inequality,the man had been kept in prison for 27 years.
Mr Mandela was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993. He became South Africa's first black president in 1994.
Mr Mandela spent nearly seven decades fighting for freedom and equality. As word of his death spread,political leaders and people around the world spoke about the life of the former South African leader.
