The Pecan (山核桃) Thief
When I was six years old, I was visiting my grandfather's farm in Kansas.Grandpa had sent me into the woods to gather pecans for us to enjoy later.
Pecan picking was really ________ work and my little basket was only half full.I wasn't about to ________ Grandpa down.Just then something caught my eye.A large brown squirrel was a few feet away.I watched as he picked up a pecan, hurried to a tree and________ in a large hole in the trunk.A moment later the squirrel jumped out and climbed down to the ground to pick up another nut.Once again, he took the pecan back to his hiding place.
The hiding place was not so secret anymore, I thought.I rushed over to the tree and looked into the hole.It was ________ with pecans! Golden pecans were right there for taking. This was my ________.Handful by handful, I scooped all of those pecans into my basket. Now it was full! I was so ________ of myself.I couldn't wait to show Grandpa all the pecans. So I ran back and shouted, “Look at all the pecans!” He looked into the basket and said, “Well, well, how did you find so many?” I told him how I'd ________ the squirrel and taken the pecans from his hiding place.
Grandpa congratulated me on how smart I'd been in watching the squirrel and his habits. Then he did something that ________ me.He handed the basket back to me and put his arm gently around my shoulders and said.“But a good man should never take advantage of someone else's hard work.”
Suddenly I felt a bit sorry. There was only one thing I could do.I carried the basket back to the tree and poured all the nuts into the hole.

How I Turned to Be Optimistic
I began to grow up that winter night when my parents told me that we might soon be leaving for America. We were on the bus then.I was crying, and all the people on the bus were turning around to look at me.I remember I could not bear the thought of never hearing again the radio programs for school children to which I listened every morning.
I do not remember myself crying for this reason again. In fact, I think I cried very little when I was saying goodbye to my friends and relatives. When we were leaving I thought about all the places I was going to see—the strange and magical places I had known only from books and pictures. The country I was leaving was hardly in my head then.
The four years that followed taught me the importance of optimism, but the idea did not come to me at once. For the first two years in New York, I was really lost—having to study in three schools as a result of family moves.I did not quite know what I was or what I should be.Mother remarried, and things became even more difficult for me.Some time passed before my stepfather and I got used to each other.I was often sad, and saw no end to “hard times”.
My responsibilities (責(zé)任) in the family increased a lot because I knew English better than everyone else at home.I wrote letters, filled out forms, took my grandparents to the doctor, and even discussed telephone bills with company representatives (代表).
From my experiences I have learned one important rule: almost all common troubles eventually (逐漸地) go away! Something good is certain to happen in the end when you do not give up, and just wait a little! I believe that my life will turn out all right, even though it will not be that easy.
1.Did the writer feel happy when she first knew that her family might soon be leaving for America?
2.How did the writer get to know America before she went there?
3.What made the writer feel lost for the first two years in New York?
4.Why did the writer's responsibilities in the family increase a lot?
5.What does the writer want to tell us from her experiences?

Going to the beach at the weekend in Australia is a very popular activity, just as much as going to a shopping centre or doing a sport. The Australian Beach Culture is similar to that in California and the Mediterranean.
Australians live by the sea, so it makes it very convenient for them to spend the weekend on the beach. Besides some places that can have winter weather, most of Australia is sunny throughout the whole year. This also provides a good chance for the development of the Australian Beach Culture.
However, when you go to the beach, there are some things you should consider. You should know that because the ozone layer (臭氧層) above some parts of Australia is thin, there is a great danger from the sunlight. The sun here is very strong and it burns the skin really fast. Australia has one of the highest rates(比率) of skin cancer in the world. So if you go to the beach, take hats and sunglasses.
Besides this, there are some other things that you should know. Sometimes the sea seems to be very peaceful, but the currents(水流) in the water can be very strong. So, if you don't know very much about the sea, you should swim only in the safe area between the flags at the beach. By the way, people are not allowed to sell anything on the beach without an official permission (官方許可證).
根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容,完成下列小題。
1.What is a very popular activity at the weekend in Australia?
________________________________________________________________________________
2.Which health problem is the most common in Australia?
________________________________________________________________________________
3.Where should you swim if you do not have enough knowledge about the sea?
________________________________________________________________________________
4.What do you need if you want to sell things on the beach?
________________________________________________________________________________
5.Why can Beach Culture be developed in Australia?
________________________________________________________________________________
