Erden Eruc has rowed across the Pacific Ocean in a rowboat since he left California in November last year. He has been heading for Australia with only birds, fish, and sharks ever since.

Crossing the Pacific is only part of journey. Eruc has decided to go all the way around the world using his own energy. He will row, bike, walk and climb the world without help from any motors at all. His plan includes climbing the tallest top on six of the continents along the way.

For the first part of his trip, he rode 5,546 miles from Seattle, Washington to Mount McKinley in Alaska and back, walked 67 miles to base camp, and climbed 20,320 feet to McKinley’s top. Now in the second part of his adventure, he is rowing to Australia.

Why would he try to go around the world this way? He explains that he wants to encourage kids to realize their dreams and to get their own goals. He wants to show kids that there might be hard parts along the way, and sometimes they might not even get that final goal. But they can have great adventures and learn a lot along the way.

Eruc has already faced some difficulties. For example, winds and waves keep pushing him westward when he wants to go south towards the Solomon Islands. If his luck doesn’t change, he will cheerfully change his plan, and aim to land at Papua New Guinea. In one way or another, he’s sure he’ll get to his next goal: Australia.

When his trip around the world takes him across land, he enjoys meeting people – especially children. He has already visited many schools and shared his story. Eruc encourages all kids to set their eyes on a goal and not give up. He says, “With goals, we will make progress, and we will be farther along than when we started, even if we don’t get some goals. Bats are the only mammals that can fly a great distance, but they have another ability. Many bats live a very long time for an animal their size.

European researchers are studying bats to understand why they live so long. They hope to make discoveries to fight the aging process (過程) in human beings.

Last week, the group of scientists said they had found important biological qualities in some bat species. The group studied bat chromosomes (染 色 體), a line of genes found in the nucleus(核) ofcells. Teeling said studying long-living mammals that have developed ways to fight aging “is another way to prove the molecular(分 子) basis of extended ‘health length.’” She added that studying bats made scientists able to learn more about the processes “that drive healthy aging.”

The European researchers studied 493 bats from four bat species. The group used information that had been gathered over more than 60 years. Of these animals, the greater mouse-eared bat generally lived the longest, an average of 37 years.

The scientists said this and a related species, which are grouped together under the name Myotis, had telomeres that did not shorten with age. Another Myotis bat holds the record for oldest age, reaching 41 years.

The scientists’ findings suggest that these bats’ cells have the ability to keep and repair their telomeres. This, they said, helps guard against the aging process. Based on its body size, a bat like the greater mouse-eared bat would be expected to live four years. But, these mammals have been found to live nearly 10 times longer than that.

The scientists found that Eighteen of these are bats. The only exception is an unusual African rodent, the naked mole rat.

The stock (庫存) changes daily but you can usually find things such as fresh vegetables, fruit and milk there. Some low-income families have said that it has changed their lives.

“Fuel for School” is another food waste project. Surplus (多余的) food from supermarkets such as vegetables, fruit and bread is used to feed hungry schoolchildren whose families may not be able to afford to buy them lunch.

I lived in Leeds for three years, and have had lunch at a food waste cafe, and it was delicious. I couldn’t believe that it was all food that supermarkets had thrown away! I have also taken part in projects such as “Foodcycle”, using supermarkets’ unwanted food to cook meals for poor people.

More cafes like this are being opened in other parts of the UK, and it is now becoming popular in the world. I think this is an amazing act as food waste is one of the world’s biggest problems. I also believe that the law should be changed, so that supermarkets don’t throw away so much perfectly good food!
