You know that eating a sensible diet and getting plenty of exercise help make your body healthy and strong. But do you know that there are ways to make your brain healthier and smarter? Here are some steps toward a smarter brain.
Limit your TV viewing
(1) Never spend too much time on TV viewing, for it needs very little brain activities.Your brain will become weak just as your muscles do.If you do watch TV, choose something educational and meaningful.
Travel
Travelling to another country forces you to see and do things in a fresh way, bringing stimulation to the brain.
Learn a new language
Learning a new language involves different learning methods.Learning a language sharpens your brain and helps prevent memory problems that you may meet in later years.
Read often
As you read, take the time to look up people or places that aren’t familiar.Reading makes your vocabulary much larger if you always search for words and definitions that you don’t know. Each week, choose an animal, a bird or fish, and read everything you can about it.Stretch your brain as you become an expert on the subject.
Calculate (計算)when you shop
As you put things in your grocery cart, total everything in your head.See how close you get to the actual total.
Use your non-dominant(不占優(yōu)勢的)hand
If you are right-handed, use your left hand for everyday activities, or use your right hand if you are left-handed.Doing familiar things in a different way will make your brain create new neural (神經(jīng))networks.
Wechat(微信)
(2) Read messages from various people. They have different interests. And some say that learning to express yourself in just 100 words is a great brain challenge.
Have a try and do these every day.Little by little you can get into the habit of challenging your brain, and make your brain smarter!

New York is one of the last large American cities to have some of its policemen on horseback. The New York police have 170 horses working on certain parts of the city. The horses are expensive to feed(喂養(yǎng)), but it is even more expensive to look after them.Because the horses must walk on the streets, they need special horse shoes. In fact, they need more than 8,000 of them each day.Every police horse in New York gets new shoes every month.Keeping these shoes in good repair is the job of six blacksmiths(鐵匠).There are only about thirty-five blacksmiths in the whole United States.
The cost of shoeing a horse is between twenty dollars and thirty-five dollars and it takes a good blacksmith two or three hours to do the job.
A blacksmith’s job is not an easy one.He must be able to shape a shoe from a piece of metal and then fit(安裝) it to the horse foot. The blacksmith must bend over(彎腰) all the time when he is fitting the shoe and must hold the weight(重量) of the horse’s leg while he works.Clearly, a blacksmith must be very strong. But even more important, he must be able to deal with horses-for before the blacksmith can begin his work, he has to get the horse to lift his leg.
One of the blacksmiths in New York is James Corbin. He came to the country from Ireland in 1948.He not only makes horseshoes for the police but also works for a group of horse owners near the city.Corbin became interested in the job of blacksmiths because his father did it, and, as he puts it, “It’s a good way to make a living.”
