The first person to walk on the Moon

July 1969, millions of people around the world watched and listened as the American astronaut Neil Armstrong became the first world watched and person to walk on the Moon.

The mission（太空飛行任務(wù)） to the Moon was named Apollo 11 because it was the eleventh mission the American launched. Apollo was the Greek and Roman god of the Sun. The Moon is around 380,000 kilometres from the Earth, and the spacecraft took three days to get there.

There were there astronauts on the Apollo spacecraft, but only two of them, Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, walked on the Moon. The third astronaut, Michael Collins, stayed in the spacecraft. Armstrong and Aldrin collected lots of Moon rocks so that scientists on Earth could study them. They also took some amazing photos. This mission was a very important step in the history of mankind（人類）.
