It is reported rhino horns are big business. Traditional Chinese medicine uses them to treat illnesses. A kilogram can be sold as much as horn $60,000.As a result, almost all rhino populations are in danger. In order to solve the serious problems, a good way to relieve pressure on the animals might be to fill the market with fakes(仿造品),so rhinos may have a chance to stay alive.

That would need the fakes to be good. But Fritz Vollrath, a zoologist at Oxford University and his partners from Fudan University have come up with a cheap and easy-to-make fake horn that is very similar to the real thing.

The main material of Dr. Vollrath's fake horn is horsehair. Although horses and rhinos look different, they are closely related. Horses do not have horns, of course, but neither do rhinos. The "horns" of rhinos are not made of bones but hairs. The hairs are tied tightly together by a mixture of dead cells. Examinations under a microscope showed that hairs from horses' tails are similar to those in the horns of rhinos.

So how can a fake rhino horn be made? First, find out the right materials. Second, a proper glue should be used. Dr. Vollrath and his partners get a special kind of glue. It is naturally produced by spiders and silkworms. Third, the glued horn is put in an oven to dry. At last, after some polishing, the fake horn looks just like a real one.

DNA would certainly tell the fakes but people's eyes are not able to tell the differences. So by making fake horns, people may help save more rhinos.

1.Rhino populations are in danger because____________.

A.they become seriously ill B.rhinos have a lot of pressure

C.fake rhino horns may fool people D.rhino horns can be sold at a good price

A.緩和 B.重復(fù) C.加劇 D.消滅

3.The underlined word "those" in Paragraph 3 refers to_

A.tails B.horses C.hairs D.examinations

4.There are ____________steps to make a fake rhino horn according to the passage.

A.three B.four C.five D.six

5.The writer's opinion about the fake rhino horns is that

A.people have to make fake rhino horns to save rhinos.

B.it's expensive and difficult to make the fake rhino horns.

C.people make the fake rhino horns to make lots of money.

D.the fake rhino horns are completely the same as the real ones.

A Tight Situation

Sometimes funny memories are the most special way to remember a beloved lover. It helps take away some of the feeling of loss. Before he passed away, my husband loved to share this story with our friends. Now, it makes a smile to share this story with you.

Our neighbor’s son was getting married in 1991 at a church, and we were invited. We immediately rushed out of the store, and I bought a nice pink dress with a jacket. The dress was a little tight, but I had a month before the June 30 wedding and I would lose a few pounds.

June 29 came and, of course, I had not lost a single pound; in fact, I had gained two. But, I thought a new girdle(收腹健美褲)would solve my problem. So on our way to the wedding, we stopped once again at the store. I ran in and told the clerk I needed a size large girdle.

The clerk round the box with the described girdle, marked “L”, and asked if I would like to try it on. “ Oh, no, large will fit just right. I won’t need to try it on.”

The next morning was hot, so I waited to get dressed until about forty-five minutes before time to go. I opened the girdle box only to find a new $49.99 girdle in a size small. Since it was too late to find another one and the dress wouldn’t fit right without a girdle, a fight broke out between me and the girdle. Have you ever tried to shake twenty pounds of potatoes into a five-pound bag? Finally, my husband, laughing like crazy, got hold of each side and shook me down into it, and I was ready to go.

As we walked into the church, he asked if I could make it. Now, he was getting worried because I was breathing funny. I told him that it would last one hour, twenty-two minutes and eight-and-one-half seconds-the minister blessed everything except my girdle!

My knees were blue and my legs lost all the feeling. My husband was asking questions and trying to comfort me.

As soon as the minister pronounced them married, I rushed out with my husband. “Please, just get me out of here!” I said.

We ran out to our car, and once there he opened the front and back passenger doors against the next car. Right there, before God, human and the wedding party, I took off that girdle. When the girdle flew out of my hand and landed under the car next to ours, my husband was laughing so hard and we drove away.

Over the years, he and I had often wondered what the people of that church thought the next morning when they found $49.99, size small girdle in their parking lot.

The police find most criminals (罪犯) because somebody tells them who the criminals are. They find other criminals by using science and their computers. When there is a bank robbery (搶劫), the police first look through their computers for the names of the bank robbers that they know about. Then they go and talk to any of these robbers who are not in prison (監(jiān)獄). They ask them where they were when the robbery happened. If any of these people cannot give a good answer, the police will often use science to find out if one of them is the robber.

Many criminals leave something of themselves at the places of the crimes like a fingerprint or a hair. Or they take something away on their shoes or clothes, like dirt or animal hair. If they leave behind some of their blood or their hair or a piece of skin, it will have their DNA inside it.

Everyone’s DNA is different and their fingerprints are also different. So, if a criminal cuts himself during a robbery or leaves his hair, or even a small piece of skin, scientists can find out what his DNA is. The police can then ask the person they think is the robber to give them his hair or some blood and see if it has the same DNA. Many criminals are in prison today because of this kind of evidences .

根據(jù)上文內(nèi)容判斷正 ( T ) 誤( F )

1.Usually the police find criminals because they use their computer.

2.The police do not usually ask criminals who are in prison about a crime because these criminals could not have done it.

3.The most useful evidences that criminals leave at the places of their crimes are things with their DNA in them.

4.Many criminals usually take something away only on their shoes after the crimes.

5.The story is about a bank robbery.
