It is a cold and dry winter morning. When you wake up, you feel that your throat hurts. You begin to sneeze and later you may cough. You must have a cold! Wait a moment. Could it just be a common cold or the flu (流感) that’s been going around?
A cold gives you a runny nose and cough. But it’s usually easy to deal with. Some take medicine while others drink herbal tea or chicken soup. Usually you feel better after a week.
On the other hand, the flu can be much more dangerous. It usually gives you fever. Sometimes it can cause death. According to an American magazine, the worst flu killed about 50 million people from 1918 to 1919.
Don’t worry. If you get a flu vaccine (疫苗), it can stop you from getting the virus (病毒). Flu vaccines work by giving the body a small amount of flu viruses. This causes your body to develop antibodies (抗體). So next time you get the flu, the antibodies should help you.
The flu virus changes every few years. Therefore, there are so many types of flu, such as H1N1 and H5N1. The antibodies for one type of flu can’t help us against all types of flu. That’s why we need to get the vaccine every year.
However, good health habits may also help stop you developing a cold or flu. Washing your hands often helps stop you from getting viruses. It is also important to get regular exercise and eat healthy food. All these can help you strengthen your immune system (增強(qiáng)免疫系統(tǒng)).

There was once a little boy with a bad temper (脾氣). He often had fights with his friends. One day, his father gave him a bag of nails (釘子) and told him to hammer (敲) a nail into the fence every time he lost his temper. The boy listened to his father and did what his father told him to do.
The first day, the boy drove 17 nails into the fence. Then the number of nails became less and less in the following days. The boy found that it was easier to keep his temper than to drive the nails into the fence. Finally, the day came when the boy didn’t lose his temper at all. He told his father about it and his father asked him to pull out one nail each time he was able to keep his temper.
The days passed and the young boy was finally able to tell his father that all the nails were gone. The father took his son by the hand and led him to the fence. He said, “You have done well, son, but look at the holes in the fence. The fence will never be the same as it was before. When you say some words in anger, your bad temper will leave a scar just like the hole. Even if you say you’re sorry, the wound is still there. If you hurt a person with words, the wound is as bad as a physical one. Friends are rare jewels (稀有珍寶). They make you smile and feel happy. So never hurt your friends.”

Counting before numbers
Before the invention of written numbers, people used many different ways to count things.
At first, people used their fingers, and even their toes. However, they could only count small numbers in this way.
After that, they began to make small marks on sticks and bones. This helped them count bigger numbers. They used them to count things like the days of a month, the amount of food and the number of animals they had.
Then people began to use tokens made from clay or small stones. This helped them count even bigger numbers. They often put the tokens on pieces of string so that they could carry them around easily. This developed into tools like the abacus.
Finally, people began to develop systems of written marks to show different numbers, and this led to the Hindu- Arabic system (0-9). We are still using this system today.
1.Did people use many ways to count things before written numbers were invented?
2.What did people use to count small numbers at first?
3.Why did people put the tokens on pieces of string?
4.How many ways of counting are mentioned(提到) in this passage?
5.Which appeared earlier, the abacus or tokens?
