What season is it in October? If you ask people from the UK, they will tell you it's "autumn". 1. Why does this season have two names in English? According to Dictionary. com, both words have been around for a long time, but neither of them was the first to describe this season. During this season, crops(莊稼)would become ripe(成熟)and farmers would have a big harvest(豐收). 2.
Then, in the 1600s, more people left their farms and moved to cities. With fewer people farming, the word "harvest" became less useful. 3. They knew leaves fell from trees during the season, so people started calling it "the fall of the leaf', or "fall" for short.
4. It gradually replaced(替代)"fall" as the word for this season.
At the same time, British people were making their first trips to North America. They brought both the words "fall" and "autumn" with them. 5.
A. English speakers needed a different name for the season.
B. The season in October is autumn.
C. But at the end of the 1600s, "autumn" from the French word, came to England.
D. So in Old English, this season was simply called "harvest".
E. That's why today's Americans have two names for one season.
F. But if you go to the US, you will find that people use both "autumn" and "fall".

A group of swans flew down to a beach where a crow(烏鴉) was jumping around. The crow watched them with disdain(鄙視).
“You have no flying skills at all!” he said to the swans. “All you can do is to move your wings. Can you turn over in the air? No, that’s beyond you. Let’s have a flying competition. I’ll show you what real flying is!”
One of the swans, a strong young male, took up the challenge. The crow flew up and began to show his skills. He flew in circles, performed other flying tricks, and then came down and looked proudly at the swan.
Now it was the swan’s turn. He flew up, and began flying over the sea. The crow flew after him, making all kinds of comments(評價) about his flying. They flew on and on till they couldn’t see the land and there was nothing but water on all sides. The crow was making fewer and fewer comments. He was now soexhaustedthat he found it hard to stay in the air, and had to struggle to keep himself from falling into the water.
The swan pretended(假裝) not to notice, and said, “Why do you keep touching the water, brother? Is that another trick?”
“No,” said the crow. He knew he had lost the competition. “I’m in trouble because of my pride! If you don’t help me, I’ll lose my life…”
The swan took pity on him, and took him on his shoulders and flew back to the beach.
