Very often, new-born babies are not beautiful. They are wrinkled (多皺的) or hairless,or they have an angry look on their faces. They seem to say,“Get away!I hate everybody.”But to a parent, that hairless, wrinkled, angry -faced baby is the most beautiful and perfect child in the world. When a proud father or mother asks you,“Well, What do you think…,isn’t she beautiful?”What are you going to say? Is this the time for the truth? Of course not!
You look that proud father in the eyes and say, “Yes,she is! She's really a beauty. She's one in a million. She's going to be a movie star! I can tell! She's as beautiful as a picture.”
In English, This is a white lie.White lies don’t hurt people. They are not cruel (殘忍的) or angry words.People use them to make a difficult thing a little easier. When people don’t want to meet someone, or eat something new that they really don’t like at a friend's house, they tell a white lie. They are trying to be kind. They don’t want to hurt anyone. It's important to be honest, but many people feel that being kind is sometimes more important.

A man came home from work late, tired, to find his 5-year-old son waiting for him at the door.
“Daddy, how much money do you make an hour?”
“If you must know, I make $20 an hour,”
“Oh,” the little boy replied, with his head down. He thought for a moment, looked up and said, “Daddy, could you lend me $10?”
The father was furious, “If you asked for the money to buy a toy or some other rubbish, then go straight to your room and think about why you are being so selfish(自私的)!”

Is there someone you hate? Well, maybe you don’t really hate them. But
you get really angry every time you think of them. If you don’t let this anger go, it can turn into bitterness(痛苦)
Bitterness appears when we can’t forgive(原諒) someone who has hurt us or made us angry. Someone might say or do something that hurts us. But Instead of controlling the anger, we keep it deep inside. Before long, a bitter feeling begins to grow. We may think we’re hurting that person by criticizing him or her often, but we’re really only hurting ourselves.
Bitterness can not only lead to serious health problems such as heart disease, but also hurt our relationships with friends and family members. No one enjoys being around an anger person for very long.
If you see bitterness in your life, here are some ways to deal with it.
Accept it
Instead of trying to deny your anger, make it clear to yourself and accept it. See your anger for what it is and quickly deal with it.
Stop making excuses for it
You may feel you have a right to be anger. You may think you’re right and the other person is wrong. You may even secretly enjoy making the other person look bad. But in the end, bitterness hurts you much more than the other person. The bitterness will hold you back, and the other person will go on with his or her life.
Forgive and forget it
You probably can’t completely put the anger out of your mind. But you can decide to forgive the other person. Forget it and move on. You’ll enjoy better health and peace of mind.

Years ago, I lived in a building in a large city. The building next to ours was only a few feet away from mine. There was a woman who lived there and whom I had never met, yet I could see her seated by her window each afternoon, sewing (縫紉) and reading.
After several months had gone by, I began to notice that her window was dirty. Everything was unclear through the dirty window. I would say to myself, “Why doesn’t that woman clean her window? It really looks terrible.”
One bright morning I decided to clean my apartment, including cleaning the window.
Late in the afternoon I finished the cleaning, I sat down by the window with a cup of coffee for a rest. What a surprise! Across the way, the woman sitting by her window was clearly seen. Her window was clean!
Then it dawned on me. I had been criticizing her dirty window, but all the time I was watching hers through my own dirty window.
That was quite an important lesson for me. How often had I looked at and criticized others through the dirty window of my heart, through my own shortcomings (缺點) ?
From then on, whenever I want to judge (判斷) someone, I ask myself first, “Am I looking at him through my own dirty window? ” Then I try to clean the window of my own world so that I can see others’ world more clearly.
