A few minutes before six o’clock, Mr. Smith left the house. He just wanted to the car when a gunman (持槍者) jumped up from the back seat. He a gun to Mr. Smith’s head. “Drive me to Paris!” he shouted.
“All right,” Mr. Smith answered. He started the engine (發(fā)動(dòng)機(jī)), pulled away (開走) from the side of the street and    down. Being 81 years old, he knew he could not fight with the gunman. He knew he needed help . Where were the police? As he drove    each crossing, he looked up and down the side streets, hoping to find a police car, but he could see     . “Just my luck,” he thought. “If I were driving too , there would be a police car on every corner.”
Suddenly he pushed his foot down on the accelerator (加速器), and the car went   faster. “What are you doing?” shouted the gunman. “To     the police,” Mr. Smith answered. “I thought I saw a police car near there.”
He ran red lights, drove wrong on one-way streets. On the two-way streets, he drove on the wrong side of the road. None of the policemen saw him. Again, Mr. Smith’s plan was not working. He had to try a new plan.
He turned at a corner and saw the    in front. Then he drove his car as fast as he could towards the police gate. The car knocked a police motorbike over and stopped. Mr. Smith shouted, “Help! Help!” Then he    back to grab (抓住) the man’s gun. At the same time the policemen heard the noise and quickly caught the gunman.

It was a hot summer day. My dad and I were getting ready to go out for a ride on the boat. Just then the phone call came, the call changed that sunny and beautiful day into a cold and dark one.
When I saw my father answering the phone, he was crying. I’d never seen my dad cry before. My heart sank. What possibly could happen?
“Max, I’m so sorry,” I heard him say. That’s when it hit me. I knew that Suzie had died.
Max has been my dad’s best friend for years. Suzie, his daughter, had a serious illness. She knew she was different from other kids. Although she couldn’t live a normal life, she was still happy.
When Suzie and I were little girls, we spent quite a bit of time together. When Suzie was ten, she had to live in a hospital. About eight months before she died, we talked at least twice a week on the phone until the end. Suzie was always so excited to talk to me and wanted to know everything I did and every thing I ate.
When Suzie and I first started calling each other, I thought it would be more of a burden on me, but I was completely wrong. I learned so much from her. She gave me more than I could ever give her. Once when I was a teenager, my father and I were standing in line to buy tickets for the circus. Finally, there was only one family between the ticket office and us. This family made a big impression on me.
There were eight children, all probably under the age of 12. You could tell they didn’t have a lot of money. Their clothes were not expensive, but they were clean. The children talked excitedly about the clowns. It was clearly a very important day out for them. The father and mother seemed happy as they could be.
The tickets lady asked how many tickets the father wanted, he proudly answered, “Please let me buy eight children’s tickets and two adults’ tickets, so I can take my family to the circus.”
The ticket lady told him the price.
The man’s wife lowered her head. There was no longer a smile on the man’s face. He quietly asked, “How much did you say?”
The ticket lady again told him the price.
The man obviously didn’t have enough money. But how could he tell his kids the bad news?
Seeing what was happening, my dad took a $20 note from his pocket and dropped in on the ground. (We were not rich ourselves at all!) He then tapped the man on the shoulder and said, “Excuse me, sir, you dropped this.”
The man understood my father was helping him. He picked up the money, looked straight into my dad’s eyes, and in tears replied. “Thank you. This really means a lot to me and my family.”
