Many teachers tell students ahead of time what the form of an exam will be. This can help you tailor (調(diào)整) how you study. For example,if you know you're going to have multiplechoice questions on World War II,you'll have to focus on studying facts and details. But if the exam contains essay questions, you'll want to think about which topics are most likely to be covered. Then come up with several possible essaytopics and use your notes, books and other reference sources to solve how you might answer questions on those topics.

As you study, review your notes and any special information from your textbook. Read things over several times if you need to,and write down any phrases or thoughts that will help you remember main ideas.

When trying to memorize dates, names or other information, keep in mind that it usually takes a number of tries to remember something correctly. That's one reason why it's a good idea to start studying in advance (提前) of a test.

In the case of math or science problems,do some practice to work out more problems. Pay special attention to anything the teacher seemed to stress (強調(diào)) in class.

Some people find there are many ways to help students to study. Work with a study partner and take turns to teach aloud. Another study way is making flashcards that summarize some of the important facts. Reading the textbook is a good way to prepare for a test. You can then use these to review for a test.

(   ) 1.Tom is going to take a test with multiplechoice questions on World War H,he should pay attention to reviewing         .

   A. essay questions   B. essay topics

   C. reference sources   D. facts and details

(   ) 2. The underlined word "contains" means "         ” in Chinese.

   A. 利用   B. 提升    C包含   D. 嘗試

(   ) 3. If we are going to take a math test,we should         .

   A. practice working out more problems   B. write down thoughts

   C. remember the topics   D. memorize the details

(   ) 4. There are        ways to study for a test in the last paragraph.

   A. two   B. three

   C. four   D. five

(   ) 5. What is the main idea of the passage?

   A. The way of studying for tests depends on the type of the test we will take.

   B. We should learn different kinds of subjects in the same way.

   C. We should study hard by practicing in different ways.

   D. We'd better remember the form of the exam we will take.

I sat at my seat waiting for the school paper to be passed around. I waited anxiously, knowing that once I received it I would know how good a writer I really was.

When the paper arrived at my classroom,I nearly knocked down five of my classmates to get the first paper. With a school paper in my hands,I returned to my seat. About a month earlier,I had handed in one of what I believed to be my best stories. I named it Symbol of Success. The head of the English Department at my school? Professor Cullen, had said that she would include some reviews of students' stories in the latest school paper. Professor Cullen was known for her rough criticism. Impressing her was very hard but I wanted to be the first to do so.

I sat at the edge of my seat as I read through the other story reviews. There wasn't one story that got more than three stars. I became calm and wasn't anxious to know my review. It was long after that when I heard someone shout out "Five stars? Seriously?" behind me. I turned around and saw the shocked expression on Gene's face, "Peter, your story gets five stars!" I couldn't believe what I was hearing. I turned my attention back to my story and saw the five stars at the end of the review that I had not read yet. I looked through the review written by Professor Cullen. She wrote that I had a gift for story writing.

I was proud that I achieved what I thought was impossible. For so long I believed I wasn't so good as I thought I was and that my talent was not enough to cover up my lack of writing skills. Where in the world can you take an hour's train ride, and pass a forest,a London street,a scene from the Wild West, and a burning building that never burns down? There's only one place, and that's Hollywood,in California. The scenes you see from the tourist train are film sets (布景) in the Universal Studios, one of the oldest and largest movie companies (公司) in the USA.

A visit to Universal Studios brings back memories of great days of Hollywood, the films and the stars. But they are only memories. Hollywood isn't quite the same as it used to be. Costs have gone up and confidence has gone down. Moviemakers are afraid to spend their money on expensive new ideas. Instead, they repeat old ones.

The film industry is changing fast. Teenagers still go out to the movies. The theatre is a good place to meet friends away from home. But older people mostly stay at home to watch series like Dynasty. TV series have become as important to Hollywood as expensive movies. These " soap opera" , as they are called, show rich, powerful families living in beautiful homes and wearing beautiful clothes. But the actors and actresses are nearly aJJ middleaged, like many of the people who watch them.

Though it is soap operas that are keeping the filmmakers of Hollywood in business, big films are still being made in America. But more and more of them are made outside Hollywood. New York is the most important new center, but there are many others as well. Moviemakers have realized that they don't need Hollywood any more. Modern cameras and real houses instead of expensively made copies in a studio. Other states, especially Florida and Texas, are working hard to take the film business away from California. They are offering better working conditions and lower cost.

But Hollywood is fighting back. The State of California is trying hard to keep its bestknown industry.
