succeed good agree true memory become they fail China child

China and Western countries may have different cultural beliefs about certain animals, but when it comes to pigs, we have reached a(n)1that pigs are ugly, lazy, stupid and shameless.

But the2 is that pigs do have some finer qualities. And it’s a proper time to clear their names now, with the arrival of the Year of the Pig on3 Spring Festival, which falls on Feb. 5 this year.

For starters, science long ago showed that pigs aren’t stupid at all. According to a paper published in 2017 in the International Journal of Comparative Psychology, pigs are similar to dogs and chimpanzees (黑猩猩) . They like to play. They have good long-term 4. And they know the difference between those who treat them 5 and those who don’t.

There are lovely pig characters in cartoons, too. Peppa Pig (小豬佩奇), for example, a UK animated television series that began in 2004, has now 6 one of the most popular cartoons in 180 countries and regions. The four members in the cartoon’s pig family teach 7 from all around the world about love, friendship, and the value of family. And in China, the adventures of McDull (麥兜), a piglet who works hard to achieve his dreams even though he keeps8, have been told in films since 2001.

People are hoping to be 9as soon as possible, but McDull is slow and patient, and not afraid of failures, said McDull’s creator Brian Tse He has a heart of gold.

Perhaps these are qualities of pigs to keep in mind when we celebrated this Chinese New Year—10intelligence, cuteness, patience and honesty.

【題目】 New research suggests that our DNA helps us to decide whether we prefer coffee or tea. Researchers from the University of Queensland in Australia studied how our genes(基因) influenced our tastes and why we like some tastes more than others.

Following the research, researchers believe they know why some of us prefer coffee while others like tea more. The researchers have found that people who like more bitter tastes are more likely to drink coffee.

The researchers say they find something strange in their research. People who are more sensitive(敏感的) to the bitter taste of caffeine are more likely to prefer coffee to tea. They were also more likely to drink more coffee than those who are not so sensitive to caffeine.

Researchers looked at the study on more than 400,000 men and women in the United Kingdom. They also looked at an Australian study that compared the tastes of 1,757 twins(雙胞胎) with their siblings. The researchers say genes aren’t the only factors(因素) influencing people’s tastes. Other things like our changing environment, social factors or the influences of taking medicine can also turn us on or off coffee or tea.

The researchers said we can learn to like coffee. Dr Liang-Dar Hwang said, “Bitter taste is influenced not only by genetics, but also environmental factors. Even though humans naturally dislike bitterness, we can learn to like or enjoy bitter-tasting food after being influenced by environmental factors.”

【題目】 Sometimes, you just can’t help it. Maybe you’re watching a sad movie, or thinking about the friend who moved away. Why do people cry? What are tears(眼淚)? Scientists are working hard to find out the answers to these questions.

Ad Vingerhoets is a professor of psychology(心理學) at Tilburg University in the Netherlands. He is one of the few scientists in the world who have studied crying. According to Vingerhoets, there are three types of tears. Basal tears are the first type. They act as a protective object between the eye and the rest of the world. Next are reflex tears. They wash your eyes clean when something gets in them. Finally, there are emotional tears. “They are connected with our feelings,” explains Vingerhoets. “Especially when we feel helpless.”

Scientists believe that crying has something to do with how humans developed and learned to depend on each other. “Humans are very complex(復雜的),” says Lauren Bylsma, a professor from the USA. “It seems that tears serve to get help and support from others.” She says another reason we cry is that humans have the longest developmental period of almost any animal. It takes a long time for humans to grow up.

Vingerhoets approves. “I think that the reason why humans cry has to do with our long childhood,” he says. “That’s the time when we are still dependent on adults for love and protection and care. Tears were a safer way to be noticed by others. In this case, it is better to use a quiet way to ask for help,” he says.

Vingerhoets and Bylsma do lots of studies to better understand why humans cry. According to Bylsma, there is still much more to discover. “It’s surprising,” she says, “how much we still don’t know.”

1What kind of tears will run down your face when something gets into your eyes?

A.Basal tears.B.Reflex tears.

C.Emotional tears.D.Complex tears.

2The underlined word “approves” in Paragraph 4 most probably means“_____________”.

A.agreesB.cheersC.repeatsD.succeeds

3Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A.It’s easy to understand why humans cry.

B.Basal tears are a type of protective object.

C.Emotional tears are better than reflex tears.

D.The reason why humans cry has nothing to do with childhood.

4We may read this passage ____________ .

A.in a mystery novelB.in a storybook

C.in a science magazineD.in a sports newspaper
