Look at the plant in the picture. It looks beautiful, right? Can you imagine (想象) it kills?

The Venus flytrap is a kindof meat-eating plant. It grows in very few places, like wetlands near the sea in North Carolina in America.

The Venus flytrap is not a large plant. It grows to be only about a foot tall. The plant has white flowers in the spring, but it is the plant’s leaves that make it so interesting. The ends of the leaves have folding parts with stiff, tiny hairs (帶小硬刺的可折疊部分). These are the plant’s “traps (捕捉器)”.

What does the Venus flytrap eat? As you might guess, the Venus flytrap eats flies (蒼蠅). It also eats spiders, ants and crickets (蟋蟀). The Venus flytrap makes most of its food with sun, air and water, just like other plants. Living things just give it extra nutrition (額外營養(yǎng)) to grow well in wetlands.

How does this plant trap and eat living things? The Venus flytrap uses a sweet liquid (液體) to attract its food. When a fly lands on one of the plant’s open traps, hairs on the surface make the trap close. And when the trap closes, the fly is dinner!

If you want to have your own Venus flytrap at home, you have to buy the plant from a special place. You can’t take a Venus flytrap from where it grows! There are laws about taking it out of the wild.

Stephen Hawking was born in Oxford, England on 8th January, 1942. He went to school in St Allbans, a small city near London. Although he did well, he was never top of his class.

There had not seemed to be anything worth doing. But shortly after I came out of hospital. I suddenly realized that there were a lot of worthwhile things I could do." Reading is the key to school success and, like any skill,it takes practice. A child learns to walk by practicing until he no longer has to think about how to put one foot in front of the other. An excellent sportsman practices until he can play quickly, correctly and without thinking. Educators call it “automaticity(自動性)”.

A child learns to read by sounding out the letters and finding the meaning of the words. With practice, he stumbles less and less, reading by the phrase. With automaticity, he doesn’t have to think about the meaning of words, so he can give all his attention to the meaning of the text.

It can begin as early as first grade. In a recent study of children in Illinois schools, Alan Rossman of Northwestern University found that automatic readers in the first grade not only read almost three times as fast as the others, but also got better results in exams.

According to Rossman, the key to automaticity is the amount(數(shù)量)of time a child spends reading, not his IQ. Any child who spends at least 3.5 to 4 hours a week reading books, magazines or newspapers will probably reach automaticity. It can happen if a child turns off TV just one night for reading at home.

You can test yourself by reading something new which is suitable for your level. If you read aloud with expression, with a sense of the meaning of the sentences, you probably are an automatic reader. If you read brokenly, one word at a time, without expression or meaning, you need more practice.

1.“ Reading is the key to school success” means that reading______.

A. helps school develop faster

B. is a key to a successful school

C. helps students go to a key school

D. can improve students’ learning results

2.Children with “automaticity” can read faster because they______.

A. know how to read the words

B. do not have to think while reading

C. read by themselves without any help

D. pay attention to the meaning of the text

3. The underlined word “stumble” in the passage means “______” in Chinese.

A. 結(jié)結(jié)巴巴地讀 B. 全神貫注地讀

C. 心不在焉地讀 D. 聲情并茂地讀

4.The best title for the passage is “______”.

A . IQ is the Key to the Automaticity

As a famous American writer, Mark Twain, once said, “Everybody talks about weather, but nobody anything about it.” It is true that everybody talks about the weather. Many people

their talks by saying, “Isn’t it a nice ?” “Do you think it will rain?” “I think it’s going to snow.”

A large number of people think they can tell the weather is going to be like. However, they ever agree with each other. One man may say, “Do you see how cloudy it is in the east? It’s going to rain tomorrow.” Another man say, “Yes, it’s cloudy in the east. We are going to have fine weather tomorrow.”

People often look for the weather they want. When a farmer needs water, he looks for something to tell him it’s going to rain and he won’t believe else. When friends have a picnic, they are so the weather is going to be fine that they sit their lunch while it is raining.

Almost everyone listens to what the weatherman says. But he doesn’t always tell us what we want and sometimes he makes a mistake. Still, he is most of the time.
