閱讀短文,回答問(wèn)題。(共5小題,每小題2分,滿分10分)

Red squirrels used to be a common sight in British forests and countryside. But there are fewer than 140,000 red squirrels left now and most of them are in Scotland. However, grey squirrels (introduced from North America) are now so common that many people dislike them. They can be legally(合法的)trapped and destroyed.

On first sight, the two types of squirrel are similar. They both have a long tail, which helps the squirrel to balance when jumping from tree to tree, and the same large eyes, small ears and powerful back legs. However, the grey squirrel has a clear physical advantage over the red. The red squirrel has a head-and-body length of 19 to 23 centimeters, a tail length of 15 to 20 centimeters and a body weight of 250 to 340 grams. Compared to this, the grey squirrel is a larger animal. The head and body measures between 23 and 30 centimeters long and the tail is between 19 and 25 centimeters long. Adult grey squirrels are heavier, weighing between 400 and 600 grams. This size allows them to store more fat and helps them to survive a hard winter, which would be fatal(致命的)to their smaller cousins .

So why are red squirrels losing out in competition with grey squirrels? Size is one factor, but there are others. Red squirrels live high up in trees, while grey squirrels spend more of their time on the ground. This means any loss of forests greatly influences the red squirrel population. Another reason for the grey squirrel’s success is its ability to use food provided by people. Like the fox, the grey squirrel can survive in towns and cities. The other problem for the red squirrel is disease. Both squirrels carry a certain virus. While this doesn’t seem to attack grey squirrels, it is fatal to red squirrels.

1.Which are introduced from North America, red squirrels or grey squirrels?

2.What helps the squirrel to balance when jumping from tree to tree?

3.How much do adult grey squirrels weigh at most?

4.Who are the “smaller cousins” mentioned in the second paragraph?

5.There are four reasons why red squirrels are losing out in competition with grey squirrels.

Please list TWO of them.(每條不得超過(guò)4個(gè)單詞)

According to a recent report, kids in primary school spend about six hours every week doing their homework.. So kids hate homework. However, their parents hate homework, too.

Is it good for kids to do homework? Of course, a great number of researches do show that kids can remember what they have learnt in class better by finishing their homework on time and homework itself plays an important role in developing their learning shills, such as independent thinking and creativity.

But for parents, the result is not the same. After a day of hard work, most of them feel like they’re going through school a second time when they sit down with their children each night to help with their homework. And a recent survey found that 46 percent of parents feel like they don’t spend enough quality time with their children, because they spend too much time doing the housework or helping with homework. And another 29 percent of parents have arguments with their kids often when they have different answers to the same question.

Now several education scientists strongly advise parents to stop helping. They say it will give their kids more independence and give parents back their free time. At the same time, the number of homework – connected arguments will be less at home. Katy Smith, an education scientist, says, “ You don’t have to know everything. Children need to put their hands up for help and so do parents. Use your resources – online teachers, or even your neighborhood – just ask.”

1.How long do the kids spend doing homework?

A. About six hours a day.

B. About six hours a week.

C. About six hours a month

D. About six hours a year

2.What do we know from the researches mentioned in Paragraph 2 ?

A. Homework improves learning skills.

B. Both parents and kids hate homework.

C. Kids love doing homework by themselves.

D. Parents enjoy sitting down helping their kids, most parents feel ___________.

3. When they are helping their kids, most parents feel ___________ .

A. they are at work again

B. they are school students again

C. they are teachers of their kids.

D. they are not as good as their kids.

4.Why do some parents argue with their kids?

A. Their kids don’t finish homework on time.

B. Their kids don’t like to do their homework.

C. Their kids don’t work out the correct answers.

D. Their kids don’t agree with them on the answers.

5.What’s Katy Smith’s advice for the parents?

A. Ask kids to finish everything at school.

B. Review everything they learn at school.

C. Look for professional help for their kids.

D. Leave the kids alone with their homework..

I have been very lucky to make many trips to China. Though I have had some trouble with the language, I have never had a problem I couldn’t solve. As a native English speaker(土生土長(zhǎng)的說(shuō)英語(yǔ)的人),I can go almost everywhere in the world and find someone to communicate with. I never thought that someone who speaks only Chinese would have a lot of trouble in my country.

Recently, the King family that I had met in China moved to Canada. I met them at the airport. My wife and I made meals for them and showed them around where we live. Everything seemed to go smoothly for the first two days as we looked for a car for them, showed them the way to different stores and the nearest city, Victoria. Mr. and Mrs King had a two-year-old son and soon we became Nainai (grandmother) and Yeye (grandfather). We were having a good time but we didn’t realize Mr. King can’t speak English.

Luckily, Mrs. King can speak very good English. Many people with Chinese background live near us. In fact, none of them speak Chinese. Mr. King can’t even buy a mobile phone without his wife’s help. He can’t talk to me, of course. By the third day, he felt lonely and worried. And on the fourth day, we decided to take them to a large Chinese community.

Now, we often visit them and they visit us too. Sometimes Mrs. King would still like to live near us but Mr. King cannot. I feel bad because he seems very nice and smart but I can’t talk with him. It seems that neither of us will learn the other’s language because of our ages, maybe we will never have a friendly conversation. But we will think of each other as friends.

1.The writer doesn’t have any trouble in travelling around the world possibly because _______.

A. he’s very lucky

B. he speaks very good English

C. he’s good at speaking Chinese

D. he is good at communicating with others

2.How did the two families feel on the first two days?

A. Sad B. Happy. C. Worried D. Lonely.

3.Who can’t speak English in this passage?

A. Mr. King B. Mrs. King

C. The writer D. The writer’s wife

4.Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the passage?

A. How the King family came to Canada.

B. How old Mr. and Mrs. King’s son was.

C. Why the King family moved to Canada.

D. Why the writer feels bad when he is with Mr. King.

5.What can we infer(推斷)from the passage?

A. Mr. King is not clever at all.

B. The writer has never been to China before.

C. Both the writer and Mr. King are quite young.

D. The two families live a little far away from each other now.
