根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容,從短文前方框內(nèi)的選項(xiàng)中選出能填入空白處的最佳選項(xiàng)

A. Dams hold water to irrigate (灌溉) fields and make power.

B. The source (源頭) of the Yellow River is drying up because of it.

C. It used to carry 32 billion m³ of water a year.

D. How does it happen?

E. Its source on Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (青藏高原) is drying up.

March 22nd is World Water Day every year. According to a report from the United Nations in 2006, more than half of the world’s major rivers have serious water loss and are polluted.

The Yellow River, the world’s fifth longest river, watered some of the oldest farms on earth. But now it has a serious problem.   1   In most of the past 35 years, it didn’t reach the sea.

The Nile in Egypt, running 6, 650 kms, is the longest river in the world.  2   Now it is down to 2 billion m³ or so. Australia’s Murray River reaches the sea only every other year.  One fifth of America’s Rio Grande has no water, either.

  3

Mostly, it’s damming (筑壩) and global warming that make rivers dry.   4  Now about 45, 000 of them lie across the world’s rivers. They hold back around 15% of the world’s fresh water from running to the sea.

Global warming is making things worse. Warmer weather takes water away. The glaciers (冰川) are becoming smaller.  5   Global warming has had certain effects on water sources. Droughts (干旱) happening around the world make people pay more attention to this fact.

科目:初中英語(yǔ) 來(lái)源: 題型:

According to scientists' research, the month in which babies are born could affect them in some ways.

Babies born in spring get sick easily. Children born under Aquarius may be less clever than those born in other seasons. They may also have shorter lives than those born in autumn  Scientists believe many of the differences can be explained by the mother's exposure to sunlight in pregnancy(懷孕).  Sunlight helps lead to the production of Vitamin D in the body. The lack of this in the first months of life may have a bad effect on mental and physical health.

Vitamin D, called the "sunshine vitamin", is known to help regulate(調(diào)節(jié)) thousands of genes during development, according to a study of more than two million people. So Vitamin D has a good effect on health  This study showed that people born from April to June had slightly shorter lives than those born in October, November or December. Similar studies in the USA showed that people born in autumn lived about 160 days longer than those born in spring.

Professor Russell Foster, an Oxford University neuroscientist on seasonal biology, said the conclusions were surprising and interesting. He added, "These are small effects but they are very, very clear. I am not giving voice to star signs and they are just for fun. But it is true that we are affected by our season of birth."

1.A baby's season of birth doesn't affect its_______.

A health              B height              C length of life           D. mind

2. According to the passage,_______ can help people get Vitamin D.

A. enough sleep                              B. enough sunlight

C fresh air                                        D. suitable seasons

3. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

    A. People born in spring may not be in good health.

    B. Children born under Aquarius are cleverer than those born under Libra.

    C. Professor Russell Foster is interested in star signs and believes in them

    D. People born in May will live longer than those born in October.

4. What does the passage mainly tell us?

    A. People can know the length of life by star sign.

    B. Women should choose to give birth to children in spring.

C A child's season of birth has some effect on him or her.

D. Vitamin D is very important to people's health.
