These days, I’m surprised at what my classmates have changed since school started. It’s not just the new teachers, new buildings, or new rules. I also notice how people are dressing differently. Dressing is not just a choice to keep warm. It’s also a healthy personal choice in so many ways.
Dress rules: Many schools have dress rules. They tell students what to wear at school. The teachers don’t hope to see their students wear unsuitable clothes in the classroom.
Self-respect: The way we dress shows the way we feel about ourselves. If we aren’t confident or need lots of attention, we’ll often dress in ways that help us get that attention. If you want to get attention in a healthy way, you don’t need to dress in an interesting way to express your mind.
Body image(形象): If some kids look very bad or ugly, dressing properly(正確地) can cover them. And it can also help them feel beautiful and comfortable among their friends.
Being what you wear: Dressing is important. Dressing in a wrong way can make people mistake(誤解)you. People like to judge according to what they see. Clothing can often give people a wrong idea.

My interest in Chinese food started many years ago, when I had my first job. I was a young reporter for the Daily Journal in San Francisco. Our office wasn’t far from Chinatown. I usually managed to arrange my time so that I could go there at least two or three times a week for a good meal.
The first time I ever ate Chinese food I loved it. And since then, it just tastes better and better to me. The first thing I noticed was the fresh tastes of the meat and vegetable. When I learned more about the food, I began to understand why it has this special feature.
About 5000 years ago, China lost much of its wood because of over population and poor management of its forest. This loss was very bad for the country, of course, but it turned out to be very good for the food. Wood became very expensive and hard to get, so the Chinese had to learn how to use it better.
In order to use less wood in cooking, they started to cut their meat and vegetable into small pieces before they put them in the hot oil. That way, the food cooked faster and they saved their fuel. The food prepared in the manner kept its fresh flavor(風(fēng)味)--- and its this flavor that attracts people to the art of Chinese cooking.
I often wonder if the Chinese appreciated their solution to that ancient energy problem as much as I do now --- whenever I eat Chinese food.

Many experts(專家)say pleasure reading is very important for learning English. We each have a memory(記憶力). That’s why we can still remember things after a long time. Some people have very good memories and they can easily learn many things in a short time, but some people can only remember things when they say or do them again and again. Many of the great men of the world have got surprising memories.
A good memory is a great help in learning a language. Everybody learns his mother language when he is a small child. He hears the sounds, remembers them and then he learns to speak. Some children are living with their parents in foreign countries. They can learn two languages as easily as one because they hear, remember and speak two languages every day. Much has been said and written about heroes now, mainly because many people think we have too few of them. There are many different kinds of heroes, but they usually seem to have two things. First, heroes show their great power by actions. Second, heroes can be tested by the time. Because of these good points, we need to choose our heroes carefully.
Olympic winner Jackie Joyner-Kersee tells young people to work hard. She hopes that if someone tries to copy her, it will be because she has got success by working hard. She says that a hero should affect another person’s life.
Poet Maya Angelou believes that a hero encourages people to treat others well. A hero should show politeness, courage, patience, and strength all the time. A hero should encourage others to follow him with actions, even though only in small ways.
Author Daniel Boorstin suggests that, “Celebrities are people who appear on newspapers, but heroes are people who make history.” If a person is truly a hero, he or she will not be soon forgotten.
We all need heroes. We need to be able to respect (尊重) people around us. Many times , the greatest heroes are the people we can see every day — our relatives, friends, and neighbours — who will never give up when facing difficulty. The parent who supports our family, the teacher who will make more money at another job but chooses to help students — all these people can be considered as heroes. A hero sets a good example, an example that encourages others to follow.

The dictionary also helps you pronounce words correctly. It uses a special alphabet (特殊字母表) to show pronunciation. If you turn to the inside back face, you will see all the phonetic letters (音標(biāo)) with some words to show you how they are pronounced. Just have a look at this page when you’re not sure how to say a word.
