My 15-year-old brother John and I saw the coat at the same time. The thick black wool of the coat was soft, and it          only 28 dollars. We looked at each other, saying       , but John’s face was shining with joy. Dark woolen coats were popular with boys at that time, and could cost several hundred dollars. But this coat was much           .
John tried on the coat and bought it at once. John wore the coat to school the next day and came home           a big smile. “How did the kids think of your coat?” I asked. “They loved it very much,” he said. I started to           him “Lord (老爺) John”.
During the next few weeks, a          came over John. He became more polite, more thoughtful and more pleasing. He would lend his classmates his pens; he would bring his father a cup of tea when he got home; he would help a blind man           the road.
One day, my brother and I met a friend in the library. “Could this be John?” he asked in a great surprise. John shook hands with him, just          a gentleman!
What         changed John? It was his own attitude. If you think you are a gentleman or a lady, you           a perfect one.

Libraries give kids a quiet and safe place to read and learn. For over 100 years, libraries have played an important role in Americans’ education. But how are these book-filled buildings changing with the times? You may be surprised to find out.
Benjamin Franklin famously founded (創(chuàng)建) America’s first lending library in 1731. But the public library system got its biggest development in the American history in the late 1800’s. Businessman Andrew Carnegie donated millions of dollars to help build free public libraries across the country. Between 1886 and 1919, Carnegie’s donations helped build 1,679 new libraries.
Carnegie believed that libraries could offer the chances to Americans, young and old. He knew that the more libraries there were, the more people would have opportunities to read and use books, speeches and news.
If you can easily find a public library in your community(社區(qū)), you’ll get more chances. After all, the United States has 9,225 public libraries. Today, libraries keep growing. Seven tenths of the libraries have free Internet. It provides much more information and opportunities to ask for jobs online.
Libraries are also teaching kids about the fun of reading. The new program Read! Build! Play! adds reading into playtime. As kids listen to a book that is being read aloud, they use Legos (樂高積木) to build images(圖像) from the story happily. Today’s libraries are always looking for creative programs to bring people into the library.

America is a mobile society. Friendships between Americans can be close and real, yet disappear soon if situations change. Neither side feels hurt by this. Both may exchange Christmas greetings for a year or two, perhaps a few letters for a while - then no more. If the same two people meet again by chance, even years later, they pick up the friendship. This can be quite difficult for us Chinese to understand, because friendships between us flower more slowly but then may become lifelong feelings, extending(延伸)sometimes deeply into both families.
Americans are ready to receive us foreigners at their homes, share their holidays, and their home life. They will enjoy welcoming us and be pleased if we accept their hospitality(好客) easily.
Another difficult point for us Chinese to understand Americans is that although they include us warmly in their personal everyday lives, they don't show their politeness to us if it requires a great deal of time. This is usually the opposite of the practice in our country where we may be generous with our time. Sometimes, we, as hosts, will appear at airports even in the middle of the night to meet a friend. We may take days off to act as guides to our foreign friends. The Americans, however, express their welcome usually at homes, but truly cannot manage the time to do a great deal with a visitor outside their daily routine(事務(wù)). They will be likely to expect us to get ourselves from the airport to our own hotel by bus. And they expect that we will phone them from there. Once we arrive at their homes, the welcome will be full, warm and real. We will find ourselves treated hospitably.
For the Americans, it is often considered more friendly to invite a friend to their homes than to go to restaurants, except for purely business matters. So accept their hospitality at home!
小題1:The writer of this passage must be_______.
A.a(chǎn)n AmericanB.a(chǎn) ChineseC.a(chǎn) visitorD.a(chǎn) student
小題2:Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A.Americans will continue their friendships again even after a long break.
B.Americans are usually more friendly than Chinese.
C.Americans always show their warmth even if they are very busy.
D.Friendships between Americans usually last for all their lives.
小題3:From the last two paragraphs we can learn that when we arrive in America to visit an American friend, we will be_______.
A.warmly welcomed at the airport
B.offered a ride to his home
C.treated hospitably at his home
D.treated to dinner in a restaurant
小題4:The underlined words "generous with our time" in Paragraph 3 mean_______.
A.strict with timeB.willing to spend time

閱讀短文,根據(jù)其內(nèi)容回答問題。
The British are known for their sense of humour. However, it is often difficult for foreigners to understand their jokes. The main point to remember is that the British often use understatement.
Understatement means saying less than you think or feel. For example, if someone gets very wet in a shower of rain, he might say, ‘It’s a little damp (潮濕的) outside.’ Or, if someone is very impolite and shouts at another person, someone else might say, ‘She isn’t exactly friendly.’ Understatement is often used in unpleasant situation or to make another person look silly. Understatement plays an important part in British humour.
Another key to understanding British humour is that the British like to make fun of themselves as well as others. They often laugh about the silly and unpleasant things that happen to our everyday life when someone accidently falls over in the street. They also like to make jokes about people from different classes of society. They like to make jokes about their accents, the way they dress and the way they behave. What’s more, the British love to watch comedies (喜劇) about people who do not know how to behave in society. The comedies series Mr Bean is a good example of this kind of humor.
Mr Bean is the character created by British actor Rowan Atkinson in 1990. Mr Bean doesn’t talk often, and instead he uses his body movement and facial expressions to make people laugh. Perhaps what makes Mr Bean so funny is that he does things that adults in the real world cannot do. Mr Bean is popular in many countries round the world because you do not have to speak English to understand the humour. Because of this, many people have become familiar with the British sense of humour.
小題1:Is it difficult for foreigners to understand British jokes?

小題3:What do the British love to watch comedies about?
小題4:How does Mr Bean make people laugh?

During the last winter holiday, I went to China with my parents. The five-day trip left me with a deep impression.
As the capital of China, Beijing is a very beautiful city with fresh air and clean streets which make the travelers feel very pleased. To my surprise, many people there were learning English. Later I was told that they did so because Beijing would hold the 29th Olympic Games and they wanted most foreigners to understand them. They strictly kept the traffic rules. When there was a red light, no one was seen crossing the street.
Of all the places I visited, I liked the Summer Palace best. To our surprise, although it was winter when we were there, we still saw green trees and many fresh flowers. The whole park was very beautiful. We visited a very modern football field. We were told the buildings where the Olympic Games would be held were even better than that. I also enjoyed skiing in Xiangshan. Skiing is an interesting and exciting sport liked by many people.
In my eyes, China is a nice place and Chinese people are very kind. In Beijing Station, there were so many people, and most of them were going home to spend the Spring Festival—the most important Chinese festival, with their families. Passengers helped each other carry luggage(行李), and they were very kind to foreigners. We were given a card by the hotel we stayed at, on which was the address of the hotel. With the card we never got lost in the city.
The five days passed quickly, but the trip left me a lot of sweet memories.
