“Everything happens for the best,” my mother said whenever I faced disappointment. “If you can carry on, one day something good will happen.”
After graduating from college in 1932, I decided to try for a job in radio, then work my way up to sports announcer(播音員). I took the bus to Chicago and knocked on the door of every station. But I was refused every time. In one studio, a nice lady told me that big stations didn’t want to accept inexperienced persons. “Go to the countryside and find a small station that’ll give you a chance,” she said.
I returned home, Dixon in Illinois. While there were no radio-announcing jobs in Dixon, my father said Smith Ward had opened a store and wanted a local sportsman to manage its sports department. Since I had played high school football in Dixon, I applied(申請). The job sounded just right for me. But I still failed in the interview. At that moment, mom’s words came to my mind: “Everything happens for the best.” Dad offered me a car to look for a job. I tried WOC Radio in Davenport in Iowa. The program director, named Peter MacArthur, told me they had already hired an announcer.
As I left his office, I felt sad. I asked aloud, “How can a man become a sports announcer if he can’t get a job in a radio station?”
I was waiting for the lift when I heard MacArthur calling, “What did you say about sports? Do you know anything about football?” Then he made me stand before a microphone and asked me to broadcast an imaginary game. As a result, I did a wonderful job and was told to broadcast Saturday’s game!
On my way home, I thought of my mother’s words again: “Everything happens for the best if you carry on. One day something good will happen.”

Every year in April, students at Renmin University of China have more pleasure than other students in Beijing. Why? Because they get a week off in the middle of term, the so-called(所謂) spring break.
“It’s been a tradition of our school for years,” said Wang Yueran, 20, a student at Renmin University. He organized a weeklong trip to Sichuan with 12 classmates last year.
But having fun is just one part of the spring break. Field trips, voluntary work, and social projects are all on students’ to-do lists. The Chinese proverb says “reading 10,000 books and traveling 10,000 miles”. It means experience is as important as theory. But while Chinese universities have the tradition of spring outings, what’s the aim of making spring break?
Qin Jianguo, from the student affairs office at Shenzhen University, thinks the idea of the spring break in some universities in China comes from the intention(目的) of pushing students out of the ivory tower(象牙塔) to get experience in their life. Many countries have similar vacations in the middle of the semester for students to do things they like. Taking Japan as an example, instead of partying like the US, many Japanese students choose to work as interns(實習(xí)生).
Besides Renmin University, only a few other universities in China, such as Yantai University, have a spring break for their students. Wei Xiang, a professor(教授) at Beijing International Studies University, said that the spring break is a good experiment for universities to give students more choices to arrange their own leisure(休閑) and study activities.
【小題1】Why do students at Renmin University of China have more pleasure than other students in Beijing in April?
【小題2】 Besides having fun, what are also on students’ to-do lists?
【小題3】According to Qin Jianguo, what is the intention of the spring break in some universities?
【小題4】 What do many Japanese students do during spring break?
【小題5】Do most of Chinese universities have spring break now?

Re: First trip to the USA
It’s a good idea to bring a small gift or something from your country. Don’t be surprised if your boss opens the gift right away. In the USA, people often open a gift when they receive it. In Korea, that is not polite, but it’s appropriate in the USA.

Americans use their hands to eat some kinds of food, such as pizza and fried chicken. Watch your American hosts, and do what they do.

Re: First trip to the USA
In Korea and Japan, it’s the custom to remove your shoes before entering a house. In the United States, you usually don’t take your shoes off. Once I was travelling in Japan and entered a house with my shoes on by mistake. Oops!

Re: First trip to the USA
Many Americans are very informal at home. One time I went to dinner at the home of an American business partner, I was surprised that everyone stood and talked in the kitchen while the husband and wife cooked dinner. Besides, unlike in Korea, everyone took part in the dinner table conversation, even the man’s wife and children.

Re: First trip to the USA
I agree with Lee. I was surprised that American men often cook and that both the husband and wife come to dinner table and talk. You probably won’t speak about business during dinner, so my advice is to know some good topics of conversation. For example, you can talk about travel, food, music, or sports. Of course, it’s good to ask about your boss’s family. But it’s not polite to question about age, salary, religion, or politics.

What is small talk? It means that the conversation is about some little things, which are not important. You can make a small talk while waiting in line at the store, or waiting for the bus or the elevator. Though the topics in small talk are not important, small talk itself is very important. It makes people relaxed, it breaks the silence, it shows friendliness(友誼) and good manners(行為), and it makes the time quickly.
In small talk, it is important to remember to smile and keep the conversation relaxed. It’s also good to show a sense of humor(幽默). You can talk about the weather, an interesting story in the news or on TV, a sports event, a play or a movie, or you can ask those parents about their new babies.
What shouldn’t you talk about? Well, you shouldn’t talk about politics(政治) or religion(宗教). Also, you should not talk too long on a topic(話題) or ask questions that are too personal. Give other people a chance to speak and listen to what they say.
