Martin’s Diary

May.21st, 2014, Wednesday, Sunny

Today I paid my first visit in my life to the dentist with my mother, because I had terrible toothache. I have never been to such a frightening place before. The moment I walked into the office, I began to worry. I saw so many people waiting, and they all looked very nervous. I sat beside my mother. To make me relax, she read a funny story to me from a children’s magazine, but it seemed not so interesting any more. Some time later, my turn came. A nurse called us, and led(帶領(lǐng)) us into the room. I was told to climb into a very big chair. I could see so many strange things around me and I was very frightened. The dentist asked me to open my mouth, and then he looked into my mouth and examined each tooth carefully. Finally he said one of my teeth looked very bad, so he had to pull it out. Before he did anything to me, I couldn’t help crying(情不自禁地叫) loudly. What a sad day it was! I promise, I will never forget what happened today and I will never forget to brush my teeth after I have something sweet!

If you ever go to the US and eat at a restaurant, there’s a very important difference you should know about. US people have a custom to give money to waiters and waitresses as a tip for their work.

But why is this? Shouldn’t waiters get paid enough by their bosses? Well, many waiters and waitresses get paid below the US minimum wage (最低工資) and work for tips to make up for that. According to the American travel website TripAdvisor, some states pay their servers (服務(wù)員) only $2.13 (about 14 yuan) per hour.

While no one makes you tip, if you are at a sit-down restaurant, it is usually expected that you tip your waiter 15 to 20 percent of what your bill is.

It’s not just for waiters either. Hotel maids, hairdressers and taxi drivers also usually work for tips. But it is much more expected to tip waiters.

The US hasn’t always had this tipping culture. In fact, people were mostly against it until the Prohibition Era (禁酒令時(shí)代) in the 1920s. The government said no one could sell alcohol (酒). Then, restaurants had trouble making enough money. So they started to ask people to tip their waiters.

This tipping culture has lasted through the years, but most people don’t like it. Some think restaurant bosses use it as an excuse to not pay their workers well. There isn’t much action being taken to make a change yet. So for now, be sure to tip your waiter when in the US.

That year, I was a Junior 2 student. Falling off the stairs hurt me in the head. Almost everyone thought I was dead. But they were wrong. However, it was difficult to get back to normal (正常的) life. I had to leave school and learn everything, walking, talking, and yes, maths.

To help me with that task, Mrs. Pillar volunteered to come to the hospital and later to my house once a week. We began with basic maths skills. As time passed by, I made progress(進(jìn)步).

I remembered very vividly how she came to my home on Sundays, sat with me at the kitchen table, and threw different coins on the table. She asked me to show her 38 cents, 17 cents, 63 cents. It was challenging (挑戰(zhàn)), but she also made it fun.

After a year and a half, I made progress a lot, both in body and mind, to return to school. Seven years later, I graduated (畢業(yè)) from the University of Texas at the top of my class .

As years went by, I always kept in touch with Mrs. Pillar. Unluckily, one day my parents told me that Mrs. Pillar was in hospital because she suffered a stroke (中風(fēng)).

Now it was my turn to help her. Mrs. Pillar lay in bed, unable to speak and know anybody around. I pulled some coins out of my pocket, dropped them on her bed, and asked her to show me 12 cents. The nurse thought that my action was very strange until one day Mrs. Pillar smiled happily as I began working with her - just as she had worked with me years before. She made progress every day and was moved out of ICU and finally out of hospital.

One day, I called to wish her a happy New Year. She spoke into the phone excitedly, "Happy New Year to you and your familyMichael. Thank you for everything you've done for me." I quickly said,"Thank you for everything you've done for me."

Mrs. Pillar was one of my Junior 2 teachers, but she taught me much more about life than only maths.
