Are cell phones making the human stupid? According to a new study out of Britain, the answer is “yes”. Cell phones are reducing the human power and we can see it from the numbers.

Professor Ian Robertson of Trinity College Dublin carried out the study. His research found that most people in Britain have to remember five passwords(密碼), five pin numbers, two number plates, three security ID numbers, and three bank account numbers — quite a lot to just get through the daily life! To get around this, most people use only one or two passwords. Cell phones, laptops, and other memory machines offer a way to all the numbers and passwords that the common people have to remember. As a result, people don’t use their memories.

The study found that one quarter of all Britons couldn’t give their home phone numbers when asked. What’s more, only a third of those could remember more than three birthdays of their family members.

The study divided the numbers into age groups, providing some clear results. About one third under the age of 30 couldn’t remember their home phone numbers without using to a cell phone or other machines. In the same age group, only 40% could provide important dates, such as birthdays, for family members. For those over 50, 87% could remember details(細(xì)節(jié)) on family. The study also found that 58% wrongly believed it impossible to remember most of the numbers and passwords they use every day.

1.Which of the following problems is Robertson most worried about?

A. Wasting much time on cell phones. B. Facing many information problems.

C. Remembering too many numbers every day. D. Depending too much on cell phones for memory.

2.What does the writer most probably agree with?

A. Memory improves as people age. B. Memory becomes poorer if used less.

C. Too many passwords lead to memory loss. D. It’s impossible to remember most passwords.

3.What is the main idea of the text?

A. Cell phones have changed people’s life. B. Cell phones should be used less often in daily life.

C. Cell phones reduce brain power in a way. D. Cell phones help people remember more numbers.

After a while attention to Tom ended, and the usual school murmur(嗡嗡讀書聲)rose upon the boring air once more. Now the boy began to steal secret glances(偷看) at the girl. She noticed it, made a face at him and gave him the back of her head for the space of a minute. When she slowly faced around again, an apple lay before her. She pushed it away. Tom gently put it back. She pushed it away again, but with less animosity(敵意). Tom patiently returned it to its place. Then she let it remain. Tom wrote on his paper, "Please take it-I got more." The girl glanced at the words, but made no sign.

Now the boy began to draw something on the paper, hiding his work with his left hand. For a time the girl refused to notice; but her human curiosity(好奇心) soon began to show itself by hardly noticeable(明顯的) signs. The boy worked on, seemingly not aware. The girl made some non-committal(含糊的) efforts to see, but the boy did not display that he was aware of it. At last she couldn't bear it and whispered:

"Let me see it."

Tom partly uncovered the picture of a house with some smoke rising from the chimney(煙囪). Then the girl's interest began to fasten itself upon the work and she forgot everything else. When it was finished, she gazed a moment, then whispered:

"It's nice-draw a man."

The artist created a man in the front yard; she was satisfied, and whispered:

"It's a beautiful man--now draw me in it."

Tom drew an hour-glass(沙漏) as the body, a full moon as her head and some arms added to it. The girl said:

"It's ever so nice-I wish I could draw. No one has ever taught me that."

"It's easy," whispered Tom, "I'll teach you."

"Oh, will you? When?"

"At noon. Do you go home to dinner?"

"I'll stay if you will."

"Good-that's a deal. What's your name?"

1.What probably happened in the classroom before this passage?

A. The girl introduced herself to the boy.

B. Eaten by the boy because it was the last one he had got.

C. Eaten by the girl because they finally became friends.

D. Eaten by the girl because the boy was drawing all the time.

3.What can we learn from the 2nd paragraph?

A. The boy didn't want the girl to show interest in his drawing.

B. The girl didn't want to show interest in the boy's drawing noticeably.

C. The boy didn't notice the girl trying several times to see his drawing.

D. The girl didn't want the boy to do the drawing in class any more.

There was once a rich man who loved his little boy very much. He wanted to try his best to please him. So, he gave him a horse to ride, beautiful rooms to live in, pictures, books, toys and everything that money could buy. But for all days, the little boy was still unhappy. He wore a frown(皺眉) wherever he went, he always wished for something he did not have. The man didn’t know how to make his son happy.

One day, a magician came to the man and said to him, "I can make your son happy and turn his frowns into smiles, but you must pay me a great price for telling him the secret."

“All right.” said the man, “No matter what you ask for, I'll give you.” The magician took the boy into a secret room. He wrote something on a piece of paper, and then gave it to the boy. There on the paper came the words, “Do one kind thing for someone every day.” The boy followed the advice and became one of the happiest boys.

Only those who stop thinking about their own happiness can be truly happy.
