Tommy’s mother came in and sat down. Then his father arrived. But they didn’t say even one word to each other. I told them about Tommy’s schoolwork and behaviour. He read it and his face became soft(柔和的). He reached for his wife’s hand. She smiled up at him. My eyes were with tears. He helped her with her coat and they left together.
I picked the paper up and looked at it again. It read: “Dear Mommy… Dear Daddy… I love you.”

In the depths of my memory, many things I did with my father still live. I call these things 1 and love.
I don’t remember my father ever getting into a swimming pool. But he did 2 the water. Any kind of 3 ride seemed to give him pleasure. 4 he loved to fish; sometimes he took me along.
But I never really liked being on the water, the way my father did. I liked being 5 the water, moving through it, having it all around me. I was not a strong 6 , or one who learned to swim early, for I had my 7 . But I loved being in the swimming pool close to my father’s office and 8 those summer days with my father, who 9 come by on a break. I needed him to see what I could do. My father would stand there in his suit, the 0 person not in swimsuit.
After swimming, I would go 11 his office and sit on the wooden chair in front of his big desk, where he let me 12 anything I found in his top desk drawer. Sometimes, if I was left alone at his desk while he worked in the lab, an assistant or a student might come in and tell me perhaps I shouldn’t be playing with his 13 . I think the most terrible thing in life for my little brother is getting up in the morning. He is almost sick when my mother calls, "Herbert! It's seven o'clock! Get up!"
Herbert answers, "I'm coming!" and goes right back to sleep. I'm not at all like my brother. I don't like to go to bed at night but I don't mind getting up in the morning. I usually wake up before my mother calls me. I jump out of bed and go into the bathroom to take a shower. I get dressed, brush my teeth, comb my hair, and get ready to go downstairs for breakfast as soon as my mother calls.
But not Herbert. He just sleeps. A military band (軍樂隊) in our bedroom could not wake him up. I call him and say, "Get up! Mum will be up here to pull you out of bed if you don't get up immediately!"
But he just sleeps. After calling a few more times my mother has to come upstairs and pull Herbert out of bed. It's that way every day with my little brother. Perhaps some day he'll learn to get up on time, but I really don't think so.
1.The most terrible thing in life for my little brother is going to school.
2.I usually jump out of bed and go into the bathroom for a shower before my mother calls.
3.When mother calls, Herbert doesn't answer and still stays in bed.
4.Sometimes we have to send for a military band to wake Herbert up.
5.The writer thinks some day Herbert will learn to get up on time.
