Mother's Day and Father's Day are two big national holidays in many western countries. And it's interesting
because they are not the same in every country. In England, Mothering Sunday is in March. In America and
Cermany and other countries, it's one Sunday in May. Fathfer's Day is in the middle of June.  How do you
celebrate Mother's Day and Father's Day? Let's learn something more about it from the following introduction.

In England, we call Mother's Day Mothering Sunday, because it's always on a Sunday.  I
don't really know the origin of it but I remember that my mother had a cup of tea early in the
morning. And then we would go to church. And at the end of the church service, the children  would collect a daffodil (水仙花) and take it back and give ic to our mother who would
normally be sitting in the service in the church. And really that's all we did to celebrate the
day.
As Ann said, I remember taking cups of tea to my mother.  The idea in general is that the
washing-up would be done; perhaps some cooking would be done on Mother's Day.  We
would try to relieve her of all those jobs to make it a special day for her, so that whenever
she looked around, there was something to eat, something to drink, or something to read, or
something interesting for her to do.
Father's Day is always in June, a Sunday in the middle of June.  On Father's Day, the idea
is to find something fun that the children could do with their father together.  I remember
going to baseball games. I think that on Father's Day it's particularly focused on doing things
together because that is supposed to be relaxing and fun for Dad.

1. In _______, Mothering Sunday is'in March.
A. Germany
B. England
C. America
D. China
2. Ann remembered that her mother _______ in the moming on Mothering Sunday.
A. had a cup of tea
B. got up late
C. collected a daffodil
D. had something to eat
3. What did Bill remember doing on Father's Day?
A. Doing housework.
B. Eating outside.
C. Coing to the church.
D. Watching baseball games.
4. What's the text mainly about?
A. The history of some national holidays.
B. The stories of some interesting holidays.
C. How to celebrate Mother's Day and Father's Day.
D. How to understand Mother's Day and Father's Day.

People in different countries have different ways of doing things. Something that is polite in one
country may be quite impolite in another. In Britain, you mustn't lift your bowl to your mouth when
you are having some liquid (液體) food. But it's different in China. And in Japan you even needn't
worry about making noises when you have it. It shows that you are enjoying it. But it is regarded as
bad manners (禮貌,方式) in Britain. If you are a visitor in Mongolia, what manners do they wish you
to have? They wish you to give a loud "burp" (打嗝) after you finish eating. Burping shows that you like
the food.
In Britain, you should try not to put your hands on the table when your're having a meal. In Mexico,
however, guests are expected to keep their hands on the table during a meal. But in Arab countries you
must be very careful with your hands. You mustn't eat with your left hand. Arabs consider it very bad
manners to eat with left hands. So, what should you do if you are on a visit in another country? Well,
just do in Rome as the Romans do. You can ask the native (本土的) people to help you or just watch
carefully and follow them.

In England recently three foreign gentlemen came to a bus stop and waited. About five minutes later,
the bus they wanted came along. They were just going to get on when suddenly there was a loud noise
behind them. People rushed onto the bus and tried to push them out of the way. Someone shouted at
them. The bus conductor came rushing down the stairs to see what all the trouble was about. The three
foreigners seem all at sea and looked embarrassed (窘迫的). No one had told them about the British
custom (習(xí)慣) of lining up for a bus that the first person who arrives at the bus stop is the first person
to get on the bus.
Learning the language of a country isn't enough. If you want to have a pleasant visit, find out as
much as possible about the manners and customs of your host country. You will probably be surprised
just how different they can be from your own. A visitor to India would do well to remember that people
there consider it impolite to use the left hand for passing food at table. The left hand is supposed to be
used for washing yourself. Also in India, you might see a man shaking his head at another to show that
he doesn't agree. But in many parts of India a shake of the head means agreement. Nodding (點(diǎn)頭) your
head when you are given a drink in Bulgaria will most probably leave you thirsty.
In that country, you shake your head to mean "yes"-a nod means "no". At a meal in countries on the
Arabic Peninsula, you will find that your glass is repeated refilled as soon as you drink up. If you think
that you have had enough, you should take the cup or glasses in your hand and give it a little shake from
side to side or place your hand over the top.
In Europe it is quite usual to cross your legs when you are sitting talking to someone even at an
important meeting. Doing this in Thailand, however, could bring about trouble. Also, you should try to
avoid (避免) touching the head of an adult (成人)-it's just not done in Thailand.
