4,000 dollars ______a large amount of money, but it is ______than what we want.

A. is, very more B. are, far more C. is, far less D. are, very little

C 【解析】句意:4,000美元是一筆巨款,但遠遠低于我們想要的水平。金錢是不可數(shù)名詞,看做單數(shù),故使用is,but表示轉折,意為雖然4000美元挺多,但是還是低于我們想要的。Far less表示“遠遠小于”,far more“遠遠多于”,A/D兩個選項不恰當,故選C。

It is widely agreed that the overuse of fossil fuels, such as coal and oil has caused serious environmental problems.Scientists are trying to find new clean energies that do not pollute the air,the water or the ground.Solar power is one of them.

Solar power is a kind of electricity which is produced by taking energy from the sun, using solar panels. The solar panels are usually fixed on the roofs of houses and buildings. It is the family solar power system. Some countries are even beginning to build solar power plants by setting thousands of solar panels in the places where there is enough sunshine.Solar power has many advantages. The power is easy to get and will never be used up.Whenever it is sunny, there is the power. The power is clean and renewable. It helps to reduce waste and pollution, which is great for the environment. In the areas that are too far away to send electricity to or not easy to build electric power plants, solar power is especially necessary. It enables the people there to use lights,TVs,computers, washing machines, fridges and many other things.

Therefore, more and more countries, such as China, the USA,Japan and India, encourage scientists to develop practical technology to put solar power to use. However, the power is not as widely used as expected.

One of the challenges is that a solar power system needs sunshine.Countries or areas with a lot of rain, like the UK,are not suitable to develop such power systems.Secondly,a solar power plant requires a very large site to fix enough solar panels to collect sunlight and change it into electricity.Maybe an area in the desert would be one of the perfect places for such a plant to build. What’s more, solar panels are expensive at present though the energy itself doesn’t cost anything.

Today scientists are working hard to develop more practical and cheaper solar power systems.Maybe one day solar power will be one of the most important clean energies in our life.

B. the sun

C. the water

2.The underlined word“reduce”probably means________.

C. to make something more

3.What is the fourth paragraph of the passage mainly about?

A. The ways to use solar power.

B. The advantages of solar power.

C. The places to build the solar power plants.

D. The difficulties of putting solar power to use widely.

4.What can we learn from the passage?

A. Solar energy itself is expensive.

A young man entered the last interview of a company. The director found the young man’s academic grade were very good.

“Did you get any scholarships(獎學金) in school?” The director asked. “None.” The young man answered.

“Was it your father who paid for your school fees(學費)?” the director asked. “My father passed away when I was one year old, so it was my mother who paid for my school fees.” the young man answered.

“Where did your mother work?” the director asked. “My mother cleaned clothes.” the young man said. The director looked the young man’s hands. He had a pair of smooth and perfect hands.

“Have you ever helped your mother wash the clothes before?” the director asked. “Never,” the young man answered. “I have a request,” the director said. “When you go back home today, go and clean your mother’s hands, and then see me tomorrow morning.”

They tell us when to get up or when we’re running late for work and whether we are in danger of missing our favourite TV programme. But while our daily activities depend on clocks that tell us the time science is discovering that our well-being is influenced by a very different kind of timepiece. Circadian rhythms---the human body’s own internal(體內的) clock—have a powerful influence on our health and behaviour. They are programmed from birth and control functions ranging from temperature and blood pressure to sleep patterns.

In recent years researchers have also discovered that this built-in mechanism (內在機制) can influence everything from the way we react to medicines to how well we learn music.

The latest example, from experts at Harvard University in the US, shows that the human body clock can even influence whether or not we are likely to tell the truth. Researchers found it was easier for people to tell lies in the afternoon because as they were tired, the self control that would normally prevent them from lying started to break down. Tiredness made it easier for them to tell lies ---especially if it meant they got a financial reward at the end.

“The body clock has a great effect on us all,” says Professor Jim Horne from the Sleep Research Centre at Loughborough University. “Most people tend to feel good around late morning and then decline in the early afternoon. But the time most of us will feel our sharpest is between 6pm and 8pm. That’s because sleepiness tends to build up throughout the day. By early evening our body clock kicks in to wake us up. One reason may be to ensure we get home safely. When our ancestors (祖先) were coming home after hunting all day, their internal clocks kicked in to get them home in one piece.”

So what effects do circadian rhythms have and what’s the best time of day to take advantage of them?

1.The underlined word “They” in the first paragraph refers to_____ .

A. our health and behaviour B. scientists and experts

C. our daily routines D. circadian rhythms

2.The research referred to in Paragraph 3 found that people would rather ______ .

A. tell lies when they are tired B. tell lies if they are rewarded

C. get angry as they become tired D. break down because they are tired

3.According to the passage, when are people most quick-thinking?

A. In the morning. B. Around midday.

C. In the late afternoon. D. In the early evening.

4.What information will the writer probably give following the last paragraph?

A. An explanation of how the human body clock controls the body.

B. Examples of how the human body clocks control the body.

C. Examples of the most suitable time to do different activities.

D. Some practical suggestions to prevent people from lying.
