New York is one of the last large American cities to have some of its policemen on horseback. The New York police have 170 horses working on certain parts of the city. The horses are expensive to feed(喂養(yǎng)), but it is even more expensive to look after them.Because the horses must walk on the streets, they need special horse shoes. In fact, they need more than 8,000 of them each day.Every police horse in New York gets new shoes every month.Keeping these shoes in good repair is the job of six blacksmiths(鐵匠).There are only about thirty-five blacksmiths in the whole United States.

The cost of shoeing a horse is between twenty dollars and thirty-five dollars and it takes a good blacksmith two or three hours to do the job.

A blacksmith’s job is not an easy one.He must be able to shape a shoe from a piece of metal and then fit(安裝) it to the horse foot. The blacksmith must bend over(彎腰) all the time when he is fitting the shoe and must hold the weight(重量) of the horse’s leg while he works.Clearly, a blacksmith must be very strong. But even more important, he must be able to deal with horses-for before the blacksmith can begin his work, he has to get the horse to lift his leg.

One of the blacksmiths in New York is James Corbin. He came to the country from Ireland in 1948.He not only makes horseshoes for the police but also works for a group of horse owners near the city.Corbin became interested in the job of blacksmiths because his father did it, and, as he puts it, “It’s a good way to make a living.”

It is true that people with better education are usually able to get better paying jobs. In other words, they have more chances to choose a good job while people with little or no education don’t. It seems that the purpose of education is to make people get jobs. But this isn’t accepted by all people.

Some people may think that a person should spend the best years of his life to get education only for a way of living. This was probably one of the earliest reasons of education. In fact, if education is just a way of making a living, people don’t need to spend so much time in school. People can get education for a living in a short time. Subjects like history and geography need not be taught to everyone. Even language and mathematics need not be taught in detail(詳細(xì)地), either. Here it is clear that education is much more than teaching a man to get a way of living.

Education is well-rounded and it is mainly for improving a man. It is not only to teach him to speak, read and write, but also to develop his creative thinking and other abilities. After that, it is to make him a wise man and thankfully enjoy the achievements of human. Education is to make a man lead a better life. Educated people are expected to be able to listen to good music, read good books, watch plays and most of all take an interest in the whole world.

I would agree that making a good living is an important reason for education, but certainly not the most important or the main reason.

1.People with little education usually ____.

A. spend a long time in school

B. have a good chance to get a job

C. spend the best years to choose jobs

D. have fewer chances to get a good job

A. make a man lead a better life

B. teach a man to write and think

C. make people get a way of living

D. teach people to read good books

3.The underlined word “well-rounded” in the passage means “_______” in Chinese.

A. 圓滿的 B. 嶄新的 C.公平的 D. 全面的

4. It is expected that educated people will be able to _____.

A. accept education as a way of living

B. take an interest in the whole world

C. develop their abilities to make plays

D. learn subjects like language and math

5.The passage mainly tells us that _______.

A. education should make a man improve

B. people can get education in a short time

C. people should be able to get better paying jobs

D. all subjects are so important for a way of living

Summer is coming soon. When is the best time for swimming in the day in summer?

If you would like to swim indoors, a good time in the day is the early hours – the body has the most energy to use because the body has woken up and will be ready for all kinds of different activities of the day.The body is going to work with enough energy and therefore a person will feel more comfortable if he swims during the early hours of the day.

Swimming early in the day can also be good for anyone who plans to swim outdoors. The conditions outside will be excellent: the water will not be too cold or too hot, and the air will be just clean and fine.Everything is suitable.

Usually, it is not a good idea to swim later in the day because one’s body is tired after work for a whole day and also the weather conditions can be the worst in the later parts of the day.

However, there are still some exceptions.Different people feel different and one’s body acts differently at different times of the day. When a person is feeling active and is not tired at all after work, it may be a better time to swim for him than for others. If he is alert (警覺的) that time, he is safe in the water.

In a word, the best time can change for every person. The person’s body condition decides when the best time for swimming is.
