THE University of St Andrews is the setting of royal(皇家的) love: on the grounds of this great Scottish university Prince William and Kate Middleton first met and fell in love.
More than that, St Andrews is Scotland's first university and one of the oldest universities in the English-speaking world. Founded in 1413 (just after Oxford and Cambridge), over 600 hundred years, the university has been well known as one of Europe's leading and most distinctive centres for teaching and research.
St Andrews is located in a small, historical town to the coast(海濱)of North East Scotland. The university itself is the perfect place for learning. On average one in three people you see in the street have something to do with the University. You start to feel very quickly that you belong.
As a student in St Andrews, playing golf is a must. With the town itself known around the world as “The Home of Golf”, the university is within minutes of the ancient golf-playing ground in the world, the Old Course, just near the sea. Students can take a break from their studies by enjoying a game of golf, and the university itself is a popular place to go.
It has one of the lowest dropout(輟學(xué)) rates in the UK---98 percent of students complete their degree. Perhaps its popularity is in part because of the fact that St Andrews is good for nearly every subject. It has long been among the UK's top five.

Are you tired of the puzzles you usually do? Sudoku is a new choice. Sudoku consists of the Japanese characters Su (meaning “number”) and Doku (meaning “single”), but it was not invented in Japan. The centerpiece of curling(冰壺)is the curling stone. Kays of Scotland has been making curling stones since 1851, when William Kay and his sons Andrew and Thomas set up a workshop in Mauchline, Ayrshire, in southwest Scotland. Kays is still owned by the relatives of the founder, and today it is the only curling stone maker left in Scotland.
Used in a highly competitive sport, the curling stones are made to exact standards. First, stones are sliced and then into round “cheeses”. Finally, the cheeses are shaped and polished into curling stones in a series of steps.

Finishing the stone’s “running edge” is done entirely by hand with a special kind of paper and a digital measure and magnifying glass (放大鏡). Lastly, a handle(把手) is fitted into holes on the top of the stone. Stones are computer-matched into pairs. Sixteen stones----8 pairs----are needed for a game, and since curling game field usually have 6 lanes, each game field needs 96 matched stones!
Kays is a small company, employing less than ten skilled workers. I needed to buy a camera, one that was simply good at taking good snaps (快照). So I went on the net, spent 15 minutes reading product reviews on good websites, wrote down the names of three top recommendations (推薦) and headed for my nearest big camera store. There in the cupboard was one of the cameras on my list. And it was on special offer. Oh joy. I pointed at it and asked a salesgirl, “Can I have one of those?” “Do you want to try it first?" she said. It didn’t quite sound like a question. “Do I need to?” I replied. “There’s nothing wrong with it?” “No, no. But you should try it,” she said encouragingly. “Compare it with the others.”
I looked across at the others: shelves of similar cameras placed along the wall, offering different prices. With so many models to choose from, it seemed that I would have to spend hours weighing X against Y, always trying to consider Z and possibly H at the same time. But when I had finished, I would still have only the same two certainties that I had entered the store with: first, soon after I carried my new camera out of the shop, it would be worth half what I paid for it; and second, my wonderful camera would very quickly be replaced by a new model.
But something in the human soul whispers that you can beat these traps (陷阱) by making the right choice. In the end, I agreed to try the model I had chosen. The salesgirl seemed a kind girl. So I let her take out my chosen camera from the cupboard, show how it took excellent pictures of my fellow shoppers... and when she started to introduce the special features, I cut in to ask whether I needed to buy a carry-case and a memory card as well.
Why do we think that new choices still offer us anything new? Perhaps it is because they offer a chance to avoid facing the fact that our real choices in this culture are far more limited than we would like to imagine.

A.The camera was not good.
B.He should get a lower price.
C.The camera would soon fall in value.
D.The price of the camera was too high.
小題3:The writer decided to try the model he had chosen because he ______.
A.knew very little about it
B.didn’t trust the salesgirl any more
C.wanted to make sure he chose the best one
D.wanted to take pictures of his fellow shoppers
小題4: It can be inferred from the passage that in the writer’s opinion, ______.
A.salespersons are not always very kind
B.people waste too much money on cameras
C.cameras have become an important part of our daily life
D.we don’t actually need so many choices when buying a product
