Our nearest neighbor is the moon. In the sky, the moon and the sun seem to be of the same size because the moon is much nearer.
The moon makes the tides—the changes in the level of the sea. The moon and the sun together pull the sea. In some parts of the world, the difference between * high tide’ (when the sea is very near to the land) and ’ low tide’ (when the sea is far away from the land) is very big. This is very important for ships.
The moon is very different from the Earth. Gravity on the moon is six times weaker than that on the Earth. There isn’t any air. During the day, it is very, very hot but at night it is very, very cold. Nothing can live on the moon.
If the moon goes between the Earth and the sun, we have an eclipse of the sun(日食) . The moon stops the light from the sun and we have night in the day.
If the Earth goes between the moon and the sun, we have an eclipse of the moon. The moon goes into the shadow( 影子) of the Earth and it disappears for a few minutes.
【小題1】When the moon goes between the Earth and the sun, we have night in the day, we call it the eclipse of
A.the moon | B.the sun | C.the stars | D.the Earth |
A.The Earth goes between the moon and the sun. |
B.The moon goes into the shadow of the sun. |
C.The moon goes into the shadow of its own. |
D.The sun disappears for a few minutes. |

The rockets take astronauts and man-made satellites into space. The satellites are used for communication, weather monitoring and research. But how do satellites stay up without falling down?
There are two opposite forces (力量) acting on the satellite. One of them is the force of gravitation (地心引力), which tries to pull the satellite towards the earth. The other force is created by the rotation (旋轉(zhuǎn)) of the satellite around the earth. This force tries to take the satellite away from the earth. With these two forces, the satellite goes round and round. The gravitational pull of the earth (the force which pulls everything towards the ground) is like a rope which keeps the satellite from flying away.
Everything that goes up has to come down. It is only a matter of time before a satellite comes back to the earth. As time goes by, the satellite loses its speed, which makes the gravitational pull stronger than the force pulling it away. This makes the satellite crash (墜落) down to the earth.
【小題1】Which of the following uses of satellites is NOT mentioned?
A.communication |
B.monitoring the weather condition |
C.doing some research |
D.taking pictures |
A.the earth |
B.the satellite itself |
C.the rotation of the satellite |
D.the rope |
A.Because of the force from the earth. |
B.Because the satellite is too big. |
C.Because of the force created by the rotation of the satellite around the earth. |
D.Because people on earth have made ropes to tie the satellites tightly. |
A.when it flies faster |
B.when its speed slows down |
C.when people cut the rope |
D.when there is no electricity in it |
A.There are four forces acting on the satellite. |
B.The force of gravitation makes the satellite go round and round. |
C.As time goes by, the satellite will finally fall down. |
D.The satellite will stay in space forever. |

Should we be afraid of sharks? Maybe not. New research into the reasons for shark attacks (攻擊) suggests that sharks don’t like the way humans taste! In fact, most people who are attacked by the shark are still alive after receiving only one bite (咬). Why is this?
There are many opinions to explain why sharks sometimes attack people. One opinion is that sharks are just curious (好奇的). We know that sharks are the strongest animals in their environment, so they are not afraid of anything. Naturally, that means they are curious when they meet something unusual. Because they don’t have hands or feet., the only way they can find out an object is to bite it! It is thought that sharks sometimes bite humans for this reason, and then swim away.
Scientists also say that sharks would not waste energy trying to eat a human, as we have a lot of bones (骨頭). It is hard for a shark to eat us because sharks don’t have hands, and they can’t pull the meat off our bones. Maybe that’s why they only bite us once. Unluckily, one bite from a large shark is serious enough to hurt people greatly!
Another opinion is that sharks attack humans by mistake. Some sharks may sometimes mistake humans for a seal. An example of this is when a shark attack attacks a surfer. A surfer lying on a surfboard looks like a seal when seen from below. Sharks like seals because they have thick fat.
Whatever the reason for shark attacks on humans, sharks should be afraid of us. Sadly, we kill almost 40 million of them each year.
【小題1】What happens to people attacked by sharks?

C.Most of them died. | D.Most of them are still alive. |

C.By touching. | D.By killing. |
A.Sharks pull meat off bones when they eat. |
B.Sharks might mistake humans for seals. |
C.Sharks like to attack surfers because of their thick fat. |
D.One bite from a shark is nothing serious. |
A.To tell surfers to stay away from sharks. |
B.To ask people to stop killing sharks. |
C.To let us know the reasons for shark attacks on people. |
D.To show that humans are much stronger than sharks. |

One day when some government officials were rebuilding a barn(谷倉), they found a mouse hole in a corner and used smoke to force the mice inside the hole to come out. A while later they indeed saw mice running out, one after another. Then, everyone thought that all the mice had escaped. But just as they began to clean up, they saw two mice squeezing(擠)out at the mouth of the hole. With some efforts, the mice finally got out. However, it was strange that after they came out of the hole, they did not run away at once. Instead, one chased after the other near the mouth of the hole. It seemed that one was trying to bite the tail of the other.
Everyone was puzzled, so they stepped nearer to take a look. They realized that one of the mice was blind and could not see anything, and the other was trying to allow the blind mouse to bite on his tail so that he could pull the blind one with him to escape.
After seeing what happened, everyone was speechless and lost in thought. During the meal time, the group of people sat down in a circle and started to chat about what happened to the two mice.
One serious American official said: “I think the relationship between those two mice was that of king and guard.” The others thought for a while and said: “That was why!”
A smart French said: “I think the relationship between those two mice was that of husband and wife.” Again the others thought for a while, and all felt it made sense.
A Japanese said: “I think the relationship between those two mice was that of mother and son.” Once again the others thought for a while, and felt this was more reasonable. So they expressed agreement another time.
At that moment, one Chinese asked: “Why did those two mice have to have a certain relationship?”
Suddenly, the group looked back at the Chinese and remained speechless. The American official, the French and the Japanese who had spoken earlier all lowered their heads in shame, and did not dare to answer.
In fact, the true love is not built on friendship, loyalty or blood relationship. Instead, it is based on no relationship.
【小題1】“it made sense” probably means ______.
A.it was strange | B.it was correct |
C.it was sweet | D.it was funny |
A.They did not dare to answer. |
B.They regretted(后悔)driving a poor blind mouse away. |
C.They had mistaken the relationship of the mice. |
D.They did not express themselves much better. |
A.a(chǎn)ll the mice came out of the hole easily |
B.the people knew one of the mice was blind at the first sight |
C.the people wanted to kill the mice with smoke |
D.each of the people understood the relationship differently |
