A Man of Vision(視覺(jué))

In 1809, Louis Braille was born in a small town in France. When he was three years old, he accidentally hurt one of his eyes. The sickness spread to his other eye. Later, Louiswas unable to see.

Louis’s parents took him out of schooltwo years later. They thought that there was nothing more for him to learn there. He could not read or write.

When he was ten years old, Louis’s parents sent him to a special school inParis. It was one of the first schools for blind people in the world. Louis learned many skills at this school. Oneof them was reading.

Back then, blind people read by feeling raised letters on the paper. But it was difficult. Too many letters felt the same, for they had similar shapes.

Louis wantedto find a better way for blind people to read. He tried to create a touch system for reading and writing. He believed a system of raised dot(小點(diǎn))could help. Night Writing-a writing system for soldiers was used. But he didn’t think it was good enough. This system did not allow the fingertip(指尖)to cover a whole letter. The readers had to move their fingers to feel theletter.

After years of hard work, he invented a shorter, easier form of this touch system. He used six dots to form each letter. It allowed a personto feel a whole letter without moving. Blind people could read much faster and easier.

Today, we call this form of written language Braillein honour of Louis Braille.

Louis died in 1852. However, his form of communication lives on. Though he became blind at a young age,he insisted a lot. Instead, he overcame the difficulty, and madea big difference.

任務(wù)型閱讀

Winter-swimming has become popular in Beijing. Three years ago, few people went swimming in the icy (冰冷的) water. But now there is a Winter-swimming Enthusiasts’ Club (冬泳愛(ài)好者協(xié)會(huì)) and it has more than 2,000 members. The oldest member is 84 years old and the youngest member is only 7. The members do different jobs at different places. They may be workers, farmers, teachers, students and so on.

Though it is very cold in winter and the temperature of water in the lakes is around 0℃, many winter-swimmers still swim in the icy water. They enjoy themselves in the lakes when other people are wearing heavy clothes.

Why are so many people interested in winter-swimming? Because winter-swimming can be good for their health. Mr. Chen is a good example. He is 69 years old, and he once had heart disease (心臟病) for 26 years. After ten years of winter-swimming, he is now in good health. Scientists are now studying the effects (影響) of winter-swimming on health.

Billy always loved blueberries. They were his favorite fruit. Today he was going to make juice with his uncle. His uncle liked to make juice out of everything. He made carrot juice, apple juice, vegetable juice, and more juices. He had never made blueberry juice before though!

First, Billy and his uncle went to a blueberry farm. They were each given a basket. They picked for an hour and got several pounds. It was hard work picking the little berries from the trees. Now Billy understood why they were expensive in the store.

Next, they had to wash the fruit. Some of them still had leaves. Those had to be pulled off. Then the bad berries had to be thrown away. They washed the berries and made them air-dry.

After that, they pushed the blueberries through a strainer(過(guò)濾網(wǎng)). The strainer caught most of the seeds and skins, and only left a small glass of dark purple juice to them.

When they tasted the juice, it wasn't very sweet. Billy's uncle didn't want to add white sugar to the juice. It was better to use a naturally sweet juice, like apple juice, pear juice, or grape juice. They used grape juice as a sweetener (甜味劑), because grapes had a similar color to the blueberries.

Finally, they could drink it. It was a lot of work to make juice, but it sure was refreshing!
