Does Success Come with a High EQ or IQ?

Most students feel that their IQs are what determines(決定) how well they are going to do in life. When they see other students doing better than them, they usually believe that those students have a higher IQ and that there is nothing they can do to change facts. However, new research into EQ suggests that success is not simple the result of a high IQ.

While your IQ tells you how intelligent you are, your EQ tells you how well you use your intelligence. Professor Salovey who invented the term EQ suggests that when predicting someone's future success, their character, as measured(測量)by EQ tests, might actually matter than their IQs.

It is generally believed that people with high EQs are open to new ideas and have positive attitudes towards life. They are also less likely to be troubled by problems.

People generally believe that a person's IQ is determined by birth. However, most social scientists agree that EQ has a lot to do with education. Some are trying to study the possibility of improving a person's EQ, especially in terms of "people skills", such as understanding and communication.

Professor Mayer, recognized by many as a leading expert in the study of changes to people's EQs, recently said the results of a study on senior high school students. When normal students were introduced to students with disabilities, they found that, afterwards, the normal students were more willing to help people with difficulties. They also showed a better understanding of the disabled students' feelings compared to students who had not been involved in the study. There was also an obvious change in the disabled students' attitudes. They became more positive about life and more willing to try new things.

The results of the study show that EQ is important. To get ahead in the world and lead a happy successful life means getting on with other people and being able to understand and react to the situations in the best way possible. This requires a high EQ, the higher the better. And the fact that it might be possible to raise EQs means that schools need to make sure that their students are receiving the education they really need, and know that their futures are not entirely determined by their IQs.

A.students with low EQs are more creative and positive toward their lives

B.it is possible for disabled students to improve their EQs with education

C.it is difficult for people with high EQs to solve problems in the best way

D.students with high IQs will be easier to succeed than students with high EQs

4.What is the writer's main purpose in writing the passage?

A.To discuss the meaning of EQ.

B.To stress the importance of EQ.

An example of VR technology

Have you ever wanted to sing on stage with Taylor Swift, or go to Mars? With the rise of virtual reality (虛擬現(xiàn)實), you might be able to do these things without even leaving your home. Unlike real reality, virtual reality means completely imaginary worlds, using high-performance computers and special glasses and gloves.

Virtual Reality (VR) has been with us for many years – at least as an idea. Although it’s hard to tell the father of this amazing technology, history suggests that it could have been the fruit of not one but five key people. First, Morton Heilig introduced users to 3D films. Then, there’s Jaron Lanier, the first person to use the term “Visual Reality”. Douglas Engelbart invented the computer mouse. Ivan Sutherland is the inventor of the first HMD and Myron Krueger, the audio wiz. Thanks to these inventors, the technology has now come of age. Users can virtually experience things they could only dream of. Virtual reality is changing the way we communicate experiences in the same way the Internet has changed the way we communicate information. Indeed, VR has become a worldwide reality, with different types of applications ( 應 用 ) from computer games to medicine, engineering, scientific research, and so on. For example, medical learners are able to train through VR in order to deal with all kinds of injuries. Designers can check every corner of their buildings and make preparations. And if you are heading to Mars, a trip in virtual reality can help you “see” what you will find before you get there.

One recent example was a doctor who practiced an operation on a little baby’s heart. This enabled him to plan out his surgery ahead of time, and helped to save the baby.

VR will make the world even smaller than it is now. It’s definitely going to bring us closer together. Like any technology, however, virtual reality has its negative effects. The first big danger is disconnection from the real world. Apart from this, too much use of VR equipment can create obvious physical and even mental (精神的) dangers. Loss of one’s sense of direction and position, sea sickness and headaches are among the signs of illness some experience after using virtual-reality equipment for long periods.

This is an ongoing topic that people are arguing about.

2.According to the passage, VR can be used to .

A.connect with real reality well

B.observe other planets in space

C.help doctors practice operations

D.build houses without preparations

3.The writer probably agrees that .

A.VR is a door to the real world

B.VR is like a coin with two sides

C.VR is responsible for increasing mental problems

D.it is easier to communicate information through VR

4.Which would be the best title for the passage?

A.To keep it or to lose it?

B.How can you imagine?

C.Have you ever wanted?

D.To agree or to disagree?
