Customs(習(xí)俗) on Eating
Food in China and western(西方的)countries is different. China has about 5000 years of history. They may spend half of their time on food. Chinese people choose food very carefully. They only use fresh materials(新鮮的材料)to make food. For example, they only eat fresh fish. Chinese have a lot of ideas for cooking. They can cook a chicken in over ten ways. 1. Western countries, like England or America, don’t have fresh food because they buy their food from supermarkets which only sell stored materials (儲(chǔ)存的材料). 2.They are unhealthy for man’s body. Western people do not have many skills for cooking, and mostly they only boil, steam (蒸) and bake(烤) the food. By the way, western people are very good at making desserts (甜點(diǎn))and chocolate. They can make very good cakes and chocolate. 3.
In China, the person who invites other people for meal would pay for the meal, but it’s not the same way in western countries. 4. They can afford(承擔(dān)費(fèi)用)it. They won’t be happy if you pay for them. In western countries like America or England, people will always give tips (小費(fèi)) to the waiter(服務(wù)員)after they finish the meal in a restaurant. If you don’t, the waiter will not be happy. In China this only happens in some top restaurants and hotels in large cities like Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou.
Another difference in eating is that: 5.
Chinese people only have three meals during a day. But western people may have more. They usually have afternoon tea when they would have fruit, cakes or biscuits with cheese (奶酪餅干).
A. These food are very sweet and they can make you become fat quickly.
B. Chinese people use chopsticks(筷子)but western people use knives and forks(餐叉).
C. Western people also prefer fast food like hamburgers and chips(薯?xiàng)l).
D. That’s why Chinese food is so popular around the world.
E. In western countries, people will think you only invite them but don’t need to pay for them.

Do you wonder why your classmates always get higher marks than you? If you think it is because they are cleverer than you, you are really wrong, according to American authors Wood Smethurst and william Luckie. In their book, Study Power, they say that successful students are not cleverer than others and that they just know the best ways to study for exams.
“The best way to study is to study actively, say the authors. You must ask yourself questions as you work. Asking yourself questions will help you remember information better and faster. To study better you also need to make the best use of your time: When you study, the authors say, only go on for 20 minutes at a time. If you study for longer you will start thinking about other things and not learn anything. The authors also tell students to listen to everything their teachers say in class and write it down.
The authors say that everyone can get high marks if they learn actively and follow their tips.
