Growing up on her own

WORLD No 2 tennis player Jelena Jankovic from Serbia (塞爾維亞) has won her second title of the year. She became champion of the China Open on September 28.
Jankovic first practiced tennis when she was nine years old. After six months Jankovic played her first match.
It was the national championship for kids up to 10 years old. She came to the semi-finals (半決賽).
When she was 11, she won a national championship for girls up to 12 years old. In order to continue her career, Jelena left Serbia and went to the United States.
At that time, she didn’t speak any English. And her family did not come with her. It was a hard time.
“I did not know what I needed to do when I was going to school. I could not do my homework. When you have a difficulty, there is nobody to help you. So, you learn it the hard way,” Jelena said.
However, it was a good learning experience for Jelena. “It makes me more independent (獨(dú)立的) and stronger as a person. I know how to do everything by myself so I don’t have to depend on (依賴) my parents or somebody else to do it for me,” she said.
In the US, Jelena received better conditions for practice and development of her game. In 2000, she became a professional (職業(yè)選手) and has been shining on the tennis court ever since.

Trees are useful to man in three very important ways. The first important way is that they provide man with food, wood and other products. Trees provide not only man with food, but also many animals with food. Without trees many animals could not live on the earth. It’s not easy for man to live on the earth, either.
The second important way is that trees give us shade. On a hot summer day, people are eager(渴望)to have a rest under the shade of a tree after they have walked a long way. You can imagine how important the shade of a tree is to man and to animals.
The third important way is that trees help to prevent drought and foods. However, in many parts of the world, man has not realized the third important way. He has cut trees down in large numbers. In the end he finds that he has lost the best friends he had.

I’ve got some information for everyone going to America next month. As you know, you’ll be staying with a family for two weeks. Now the most important thing is money. You should take about £30 in cash (現(xiàn)金) and about £200 in travelers cheques (支票). Then when you arrive at the airport you’ll be met by our host (主人) family. You must remember to wear a red shirt so the family will find you easily. I’ve told them to look out for the red shirts. You’ll also need to take with you 4 photos of yourself and, of course, it’s very important that you take the school letter. While you are there, if you have any problems, you can call our agent (代理人). I’ll give you her office phone number now: It’s 580-4436 and the person to ask for is Mrs. Belcher, that’s B-E-L-C-H-E-R. Louis Braille was born in Coupvray, France. He was a very small child. Unluckily, at the age of four, he became blind by accident. Louis began attending school in his town when he was seven years old.
Three years later, Louis and his father traveled to Paris. There, he went to a school for blind children. One day a French soldier, Charles Barbier, visited the school. Barbier invented a system of night-reading. This system used small dots for the letters. Soldiers used this system in time of war. Barbier thought this system could help the blind to read.
Soon Braille discovered that there were some shortcoming (缺點(diǎn)) in Barbier’s system, but it gave Louis a brilliant idea. He improved Barbier’s system. By the age of fifteen, his new system was completed! Now he wanted blind schools to try his system. Luck went against him again. The school refused to use his system. Louis died in 1852 in Paris at the age of forty-three.
Two years after he died, the blind schools began to use his system. Today we call this system Braille in honour of Louis Braille. His system is used for all languages, and for maths, science, writing, music, and computers for the blind.
