Give water, save lives

A bottle of water may not seem like much to you, but thousands of bottles will be of great help for people who live in drought-hit(遭受旱災(zāi)) areas in China.

Since last autumn, there has been very little rain in Southwest China. Some places, especially in Yunnan, Guangxi, Sichuan, Guizhou, have experienced a serious drought. Crops (莊稼) died, the land cracked(裂開), and wells (井) and rivers dried up. More than 20 million people are having difficulty in finding safe drinking water.

After learning about the drought, many people around the country helped by giving water, money and other things.

Last week, every member of the Communist Youth League (共青團員) and Young Pioneers(少先隊員) were encouraged to give one bottle of water to the drought-hit areas. Students in primary schools and middle schools quickly joined the activity. In Yuhua Primary School in Xi' an, 900 students bought over 1,000 bottles of water with their pocket money. They also wrote their wishes on the bottles.

The serious drought has also made students realize the importance of saving water. Students from Nanshan Middle School in Huizhou, Guangdong went on the street to tell people to take part in water-saving activities.

“I've heard that some children in drought-hit areas don't have enough drinking water. They have to drink muddy ( 含有泥土的 ) water. I feel really sad about that," said one student. “I decide to take a shower twice a week instead of every day to save water,” he said.

Every day since March 8, people all over the world keep asking the same question: Where did Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 go? It turns out to be the biggest mystery in modern aviation (航空) history.

In the early hours of March 8, a Boeing 777 took off from Malaysia’s capital Kuala Lumpur (吉隆坡). It was heading to Beijing. But about two hours into the flight, the plane lost contact. There were 239 people on board the Malaysia Airlines flight, including 154 Chinese.

About 12 countries, including China, the US and Australia, have joined the search for the missing plane and passengers. The plane’s disappearance was a “mystery”, said officials. The plane was flying at a height of more than 10,000 meters when it suddenly lost contact. The weather was clear. The pilots didn’t make any distress calls (求救信號). When a plane crashes, broken parts are usually recovered. But up to April 2, officials have not found anything.

People are also talking about a possible hijacking. Interpol (國際刑警組織) said that two people on the flight used stolen passports. But that information alone isn’t evidence(證據(jù)) of a hijack.

The investigation (調(diào)查) is still going on. It could take months or even years to find out what happened to the flight.

“We are looking at all possibilities,” said Malaysian Transport Minister Hishamuddin Hussein. “The most important thing now is to find the plane.”

On March 24 came a piece of sad news. Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak said that the plane “ended in the southern Indian Ocean”. Everyone on the plane died. But the mystery is still not solved. Nobody is giving up. China has said it will work hard to find out the truth at all costs.

There are many things you can do to improve your memory. Among them are many kinds of useful ways as well as taking special care of your health.

It is important that you make yourself excited to make your memory more active. You can do this by doing some new activities and by changing your daily habits. Learning a new skill helps your brain(大腦)to develop. When trying to remember something, you should pay special attention to the most important things about it. Do not allow other thoughts to enter your mind because this will reduce your chances of making right memories.

An excellent way to help memory is to connect(聯(lián)系) information with pictures. Try to see the pictures in your mind. Taking notes and keeping a diary will also be helpful.

Healthy food and plenty of vitamins(維生素) are necessary for your memory to work well. Drinking a lot of water also helps keep your memory. You must allow your brain to have enough sleep and rest. When you are asleep, your brain stores memory. Not enough sleep can cause problems with storing information. And being tired will also stop you from being able to think clearly and well.

In order to keep your mind on your work, you must be free from worry. Generally, keeping fit and normal health checks are both important as well---not just for improving your memory.
