I wanted to do something very special for my fifteen-year-old son,who has always been the perfect child. He worked all summer to make enough money to buy a used motorbike. Then,he spent hours and hours on it until it looked almost new. I was so proud of him that I bought him the shiniest helmet (頭盔) and a riding outfit (裝備) .

I could hardly wait for him to open up his gift. In fact,I could hardly slept the night before. As soon as Iwoke up the next morning,Iwent to the kitchen to start the coffee, tea, and morning goodies (好吃的東西) .In the living room was a beautiful keyboard (鋼琴鍵盤) with a note:"To my wonderful mother, all my love, your son."

I was so surprised. It had been a longstanding joke in our family that I wanted a piano so that I could take lessons. "Learn to play the piano, and I'll get you one" was my husband's reply.

I stood there shocked (震驚的) ,asking myself how my son could afford this expensive gift.

Of course, the house awoke, and my son was thrilled (激動(dòng)的) with my reaction (反應(yīng)) . Many kisses were exchanged, and I immediately wanted him to open my gift.

As he saw the helmet and outfit, the look on his face was not exactly what Iwas expecting. Then I realized that he had sold the motorcycle to get me the keyboard.

Of course Iwas the proudest mother ever on that day,and my feet never hit the ground for a month.

The next day,my husband and I bought him a new "used" shiny motorcycle.

I spoke at a middle school in 1995. When it was over, the headmaster asked me if I would visit a special student. An illness had kept him at home. He wanted to meet me,thinking I knew about overcoming (克服) difficulties and going for dreams. I agreed.

During the drive to his home,I knew he was called Matthew,a real fighter. He had a muscle (肌肉) disease. I spent an afternoon talking to Matthew. Never once did he complain or ask, "Why me?" He didn't mention how he was made fun of being different;he just talked about his hope for the future, and how one day he wanted to lift weights with me.

When we finished talking,I pulled out the first gold medal I won and put it around his neck. I told him he was more of a winner and knew more about success and overcoming difficulties than I. Last summer I heard from Matthew's parents. They wanted me to read a letter he had written to me a few days before his death.

Dear Rick,

I've kept all the letters you wrote to me. I told you someday I was going to the Olympics to win a gold medal. I know now I will never get to do that. But I know I am a champion. When I get to heaven,God will give me my gold medal, and when you get there,I will show it to you.
