When a 13-year-old girl was riding home, a man suddenly jumped out and pulled her off her bike and rode away. The girl didn't run after the man. She found a telephone and called the police at 110.“Safety is the most important thing in such a situation,” The girl said her teacher had told her in her first aid (急救) class. “It is not safe to run after an adult who is much stronger than you.” The girl is a junior student at a school in Guangdong. Answer the questions(根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容回答下列問題)

Every Saturday morning, Helen Myers opens the door of the little library in Ellisville, Illinois. She raises the flag outside, sits down with a book and waits for people to come. “If I have two people come in, it’s a big crowd,” says Myers, 77.

The old lady has kept the library for more than 40 years in an old small building. It all began in June 1966, when Myers opened her library with 400 books from her home shelves. At that time, she took care of a boys’ community service group. “One of the boys noticed that I had a lot of books, and he said, ‘I sure wish we could have a library here in town.’” Myers remembers. That’s all she needed.

Today, people don’t read much. They watch TV and play video games. But that doesn’t stop Myers from opening her library every Saturday to share her love of books. The library has always been Myers’ favorite project. In the 1970s, when the old building was too dangerous to stay in, she began saving money for a new building.

She sells homemade cookies, and the money pays the bills for the library. As the news about the country’s smallest library spreads, donations began coming in. With the donations and her own savings, Myers built Ellisville Library II, which opened in October 2003. The new library has 3500 donated books, new and used.

Many times, Myers opens and closes the library and sees no one. “My daughter said, ‘Mom, why don’t you give up?’” Myers says, “I said, ‘No. Somebody, some day, may read. Who knows? A future president of the United States may come in and get a book.’”

1.The library doesn’t have a lot of readers, does it?

2.How many books did the library have when it opened in 1966?

3.What does Myers do to pay the bill for the library?

4.Why did she need a new building for the library?

5.Where did the money for the new building come from?

6.If you are Myers, what will you do? Why?

There are many colors in nature. But do you think that a color has weight? I think you'll say “no”. But I'm afraid you are wrong. If you don't believe it, you may do a small experiment (實驗).

First, put two objects with the same weight into two boxes. Then cover the boxes. Third, wrap(色裹) one box with a red piece of paper, the other one with a white piece of paper. OK.Now hold the boxes with your hand one by one.It is certain that you will think the red one is a little heavier.

Why do you think so? A scientist found that different colors have different weights in man's mind. That is to say, every color has its own weight in our mind.

The scientist told us that colors also have smell. Can you smell the color? Of course not. Then why did the scientist say so. That is because every color stands for (代表) a kind of light with a certain wavelength (波長).It reaches our brain through sense organs.

According to this discovery, scientists say that people accept the colors they like, and refuse the colors they hate.So your body and mind will be healthy by using the colors you like.Or you'll be nervous or even get ill. For example, you like blue and hate red.If you stay in a room with red windows, wallpaper and furniture for two hours, you'll feel you have been there for four hours. But if the room is blue, you'll feel you have been there for only an hour. And, if a person walks out of a blue room and into a red room, his temperature will rise.

That means our body temperature will change with different colors.

1.From the experiment, we know that_________.

A.the two boxes have the same weight

B.colors can change the weight of an object

C.the red paper is heavier than the white paper

D.colors have different weights in people's mind

2.From the fourth paragraph, we can infer ____.

A.the smell of colors is changeable(可變的)

B.people can sense the light from colors

C.people can smell the colors through the nose

D.a(chǎn)ll the colors have the same smell for the blind

3.Which of the following is true? ____.

A.White color is heavier than red color

B.People may get ill if they refuse the colors they don't like

C.People can stay longer in red rooms than in blue rooms

D.People's body temperature will change with different colors

4.We can infer from the last paragraph that____.

A.red color is bad for our health

B.people may get nervous in a red room

C.blue color can raise(提升)our body temperature

D.colors can influence our mood(情緒)and health

5.The passage is probably ____.

A.a(chǎn) short novel B.a(chǎn) news report

C.a(chǎn) science report D.a(chǎn)n advertisement

Do you know that a fast reader can get the ideas better than a slow reader can? Of course, you save time by reading fast, but this is not the main reason for fast reading. The main reason is that you understand better what you are reading when you read fast.

As your eyes move along the line of point, they make fixations (固定) or pauses (暫停). It is important that you see several words at a fixation. It is also important that your eyes leave a group. The numbers of letters or words that you see at a fixation are called your eye span (視跨). Pay more attention to improving your rate of reading. With practice you can learn to read faster than you usually read.

The way in which you read always depends on (取決于) what you are reading and for what purpose. You should know the different ways of reading so that you can apply whatever method is necessary. Here are four ways of reading:

(1) Skimming is an important kind of reading. This method can be used when you wish to review something that you have forgotten. You can skim to get the main points.

(2) Rapid (快速) first reading and then rereading certain parts carefully is important. You may use this type of reading to study a science lesson or a history lesson.

(3) You need to do careful reading and rereading sometimes. This type of reading is necessary for making an intensive (細(xì)致的) study of your school subjects, solving maths problems or reading directions.

(4) Rapid reading is used when reading stories for enjoyment. You may also do rapid reading when reviewing materials that you already know well.

1.The main reason for reading fast is that you can ________.

A. get the ideas B. save time

C. understand better D. learn well

2.The way of reading always depends on ________.

A. the method that you like B. your reading material

C. your reading purpose D. both B and C

3.The word “skimming ” means “________”.

A. reading the main points

B. reading carefully

C. reading very fast

D. reading some parts of the material

4.Careful reading is an important kind of reading ________.

A. when you review a lesson that you already know well

This is the VOA Special English Agriculture Report.

One of the sweetest gifts of nature is a red, ripe strawberry. There are three basic kinds of strawberries: June bearing, ever bearing and day neutrals.

June bearing are ready in the spring, so they are also called spring bearing. But gardeners will not get a crop during the first spring after planting. Ever bearing , when planted after the last winter freeze, will produce fruit during spring or early summer. A second or sometimes third crop will be ready in late summer. Day neutrals produce fruit throughout the summer months.

The University of Illinois Urban Extension says ever bearers and day neutrals are especially good for home gardens. Plant strawberries in the spring as soon as the soil is dry enough. Try to plant late in the day or on a cloudy day. The soil should cover just the roots and not the crown on top of the plant. Runners will appear in a few weeks.

Strawberries grown in containers(容器) need a soil depth of about twenty-five to thirty centimeters. Be sure the container has holes in the bottom.

Strawberries grow well in loamy soil(沃土) that lets water pass through easily. Carl Wilson at the Colorado State University Extension suggests mixing about three to five percent organic(有機的) material into the soil.

根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容,判斷下列句子正誤。正確的用“A”表示,不正確的用“B”表示。

1.The strawberry is a kind of fruit with red color and sweet taste.

2.June bearing is usually planted in winter of last year.

3.Strawberries can grow both in gardens and in containers.

4.The right time to plant strawberries is on a wet day.

5.Strawberries only produce fruit once.
