Ma Yun became one of the richest men in China when his company Alibaba went on the stock(股票)market in 2014 with a value of around £140 billion-the largest public offering in history. Here are some stories about him on the way to success.

Ma made his first trip to the US in 1995 and used the Internet for the first time. After searching for "beer"，he saw that no results came up about China. "Then he searched for "China" and still saw no results. He decided to set up a Chinese website-the seed for Alibaba was sown(播種).

Ma said he was refused many times in his life. He failed the College Entrance Examination in China three times and few companies offered him jobs, including one at KFC. And he was refused by the famous Harvard University 10 times.

It was difficult to learn English when Ma was a teenager because of limited resources. However, he found that he could learn English well by giving tourists free guides around his hometown Hangzhou. And he kept it for nine years. Ma said that tourists opened up a new world for him because everything they said and did was so different from what he had been taught at school and by his parents.

Ma's hero is Forest Clump who never gives up. When he made a speech about his success at Davos(達沃斯論壇)in 2015. Ma said, "Life is like a box of chocolates because you never know what you are going to get. "

Sydney Fredette has a lot of things to deal with. Not only is she a high school student, but she has also set up her own organization, Beary Merry Christmas. She volunteers（自愿）to serve poor kids and families in Orange Country in California, US.

To remember her best friend who died of cancer nearly 10 years ago, Fredette decided to serve those in Orange Country who are less lucky than she is.

She began with the simple idea of collecting donated(捐贈的) Build-A-Bears, the popular toy animal that is made by children themselves in the stores’ workshops. Fredette then gave them as gifts to the homeless children in California during the holiday season.

With donations at more than 100 bears a year, Fredette and volunteers host activities every year, where volunteers not only give out the bears, but also clothing, meals, and other things.

Not wanting to limit（限制）the giving to just the holiday months, Fredette now hosts other activities for Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day and Halloween, providing the chance for her volunteer team to make a difference through the year.

＂I love making relationships with the people I serve,＂ Fredette said. ＂The thanks they have, hearing their stories and seeing how happy they are, it’s so cool.＂

Future plans for Fredette include building a public food bank and providing a self-development class for students in her school who will soon attend college.

Heading to college herself in the fall, Fredette is looking to stay local and continue to help out in her hometown. In fact, she was regarded as a ＂Dreamer & Doer＂ not long ago for her work in improving her community, along with 32 other high school students.
