In the past, working people in Britain only had holidays on holy(神圣的)days: Sundays, Christmas and Easter. Now most people have about four weeks holiday every year plus public holidays (also called "bank holidays").
British people usually have their holidays in summer, in July or August. Many working people take a two-week holiday during the summer. School children are on holiday from about the end of July to the start of September.
The holiday break in winter or in spring is also becoming more popular in the UK. In winter some people go skiing in Europe, and in spring, visits to capital cities such as Paris, Amsterdam or Barcelona are popular.
The most popular holiday locations for British people include Spain, France, Greece and the USA. Lots of people buy a package holiday. It includes flights(機票)and a hotel or an apartment. Cheap flights to warm places mean that many British people are able to spend two weeks a year relaxing in the sun abroad.
Flights and package holidays are much cheaper during school term time and the British government(政府)is worried that some young people are missing school to go on holiday. Parents who take their children on holiday during term time can now pay a fine of up to 100 pounds.

When you see flowers for sale, do you ever think of how they got from where they were grown? In most cases, they were grown in another country and imported to a big market in the Netherlands (荷蘭),which sells 80 percent of the flowers and plants in the world. After they are traded there, they are exported again by plane all over the world. Eventually, they come to your town or city.
Since the 1500s Netherlands has been famous for growing and selling plants. In 1592,the first tulip (郁金香)bulb was imported to Netherlands from Turkey and tulips quickly caught on. As a matter of fact, some people struck it rich with tulips. Just one tulip bulb was worth as much as a house in Amsterdam!
These days, the nation is still famous for its tulips and many other kinds of flowers as well. Many kinds of flowers are grown in greenhouses that are heated and lit so it's summer all year inside. In addition, millions of flowers arrive by plane every day at Amsterdam Airport. The center of the flower industry is the Aalsmeer Flower Auction located near the airport, about 16 kilometers from downtown Amsterdam. Every year, three billion flowers and 400 million plants are traded here. They come from 8,000 growers in places like Kenya, Ecuador and Indonesia. In an auction, buyers try to get the best flowers for the lowest prices so they can make a profit. At Aalsmeer, the prices start high and decrease. You have to watch out because it happens very quickly. The first person to press a button gets the plants at that price. As a rule, it only takes seconds to sell bunches of flowers, especially those in high demand. six hundred groups are sold each hour, so you have to decide what price you will payin a hurry. As soon as beautiful roses catch your eye, you must act. The next time you admire a bunch of roses, think about the adventure that the flowers have had. Where they came from may remain a mystery, but they almost certainly had a brief stop at Aalsmeer.
